Q&As

1 - 5 of 5 Questions

Q: Will this feed help chickens gain weight

1 Answer
  • A: Hello, thank you for your question. This Purina Layena Plus layer feed is formulated for egg production and good body condition in laying hens. It isn’t designed to make chickens gain significant weight, so you won’t see major weight gain from it alone.

Q: I have 2 male birds with my hens, whey can't they eat this feed. They are all in the same pen.

A: For roosters, it's best to use Purina Flock Raiser. Roosters do not need the extra calcium found in layer feeds like Layena. In fact, feeding them a layer feed can shorten their lifespan and reduce their fertility, which would be counterproductive if you are trying to breed your birds. Feeding two different diets to a mixed flock can indeed be a challenge. Here are a few strategies you might consider: 1. Separate Feeders: If you have standard size birds, you can place a separate feeder with Flock Raiser at a height that only the rooster can reach. This way, the hens will stick to the Layena feed, while the rooster will have access to the Flock Raiser. 2. Nutrient Needs: Chickens tend to eat to meet their nutrient requirements. With both Flock Raiser and Layena available, the hens will likely consume Layena to get the calcium they need for egg production, while the rooster will prefer Flock Raiser due to its lower calcium content. 3. Oyster Shell Feeder: Another option is to feed everyone Flock Raiser and provide a separate feeder with oyster shell for the hens. This will allow the hens to get the extra calcium they need without affecting the rooster. I hope these suggestions help you manage your flock's feeding needs effectively. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to reach out.

Q: what size are these pellets. regular larger or pearls smaller? looking for food for laying quails

1 Answer
  • Purina Product Expert
A: Layena is not labeled for use in quail, so we can’t recommend that it be fed to quail. Purina Game Bird Layer is the best option for egg-laying quail.

Good protein for my guineas - though they are pick

The protein content of this is great for my guineas, but my guineas are picky and are leaving a lot on the ground. It may just be them getting used to it so I am switching between this and DuMor that they eat well. Between the two feeds, they are getting plenty of what they need. Can't say how well they are laying yet as the season has just begun. Plus, I find the switching back and forth switching between brands throughout the lay season and beyond is often beneficial for them, at least in my opinion.
