The Pirtle Nursery 3.74 gal. Kieffer Pear Tree is a vigorous tree that produces medium to large fruit. It performs well in hot climates and is an excellent variety for canning, baking and preserves. The Kieffer Pear requires 300 chill hours and another European pear tree as a cross-pollinator, such as another Kieffer Pear or Bartlett Pear tree. This pear fruit tree has small, single white flowers that bloom in the spring, with fresh fruit that ripens during mid-fall. Kieffer Pears are susceptible to blight.

  • A: Thanks for the question! While technically the Kieffer pear is considered self-fertile, we do recommend to have a pollinator for fruit production. It is important to keep in mind that planting a second pear variety nearby is highly recommended for a more abundant and better-quality harvest.

Q: What kind of rootstock are these grafted onto?

1 Answer
  • A: Hi, Pirtle Nursery's 3.74-gallon potted Kieffer pear trees are typically grafted onto Pyrus calleryana (also known as Callery pear) rootstock for optimal performance, rooting, growing, and to keep the height in check, which is a semi-dwarf rootstock.

Q: Will this pear tree grow in zone 8. When is best time to plant.

1 Answer
  • A: Hi there, Yes, this will grow in a zone 8. The best time is early spring to plant however, this tree thrives in warmer climates so you can plant at any time, however if its mid summer and hot, you would need to water each day until the plant has time to root in the ground to pull moisture from the ground. that’s why I suggest to wait until the weather cools down and that can be fall or early spring when it is cooler weather. Then you don’t have to pay as much attention to the plant

Q: quite odd it can grow to 30" considering some at the store here are 7' or more. i believe they are fairly blight resistant also. is this a fake news place. lol.

  • A: Hi, Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I have requested to have the information updated. Per the vendor-"That is a misprint. Keiffer pear can grow to 30 feet in height , not inches. And yes they are blight resistant and a good canning or eating pear."

1 Answer
  • A: While Kiefer pears are practically immune to blight, it can still occur.

Purchased a potted Kieffer Pear Tree at my local Tractor Supply and it seems to be a healthy tree.

Not a beginner tree! Beware that pests, like apple, are prone to “fireblight” - a bacterial infection that can kill your tree. Both of the trees I bought from tractor supply were infected with this, though kieffer pears are known to be moderately resistant. Really good trees for the price (they were $15 each when I got them) but must be monitored and pruned with sanitize shears at first notice of infection! Also got some peach varieties that are doing wonderful.

Yes, I recommend this product.
