Ivermectin is a macrocyclic lactone endectocide. It selectively binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells of invertebrates, leading to paralysis and death of target parasites. Mammals are protected, due to the absence of these channels and the limited ability of ivermectin to cross the blood-brain barrier.
