Doing Great So Far, Know How to Treat a Pasty Bum!

So far so good. They arrived at the post office bit less than 2 days after the shipping confirmation, and we got a call from PO right away. When i went to pick them up the box came out peeping energetically. The chicks have been with us for four days now and out of 20 we have had 4 cases of pasty bum, but only once or twice per chick the first day and a half. Still time for health problems to arise for sure, but they seem largely healthy and happy in their new areas. We are keeping them in a front room ~65-70 degrees F because it is still consistently under 45 degrees in the garage, and we have a 2x5 set of totes connected by a tunnel with a warming lamp on one side above the eating area, and a warming raised plate for them to hide and sleep under on the other end. (water not under warming light as recommended). Probably overkill i know with both the heat lamp and the warming plate hut, but they really seem to love running back and forth and hanging out in the varying degrees of warmth or out of the heat entirely. Fine pine shavings abt 1.5-2 inches thick but they dig and cratch a lot for the food that they have knocked out of their feeder, and enjoy looking around for that a lot even though it is much easier to eat right out of the feeder. For the pasty bum, we just run the very ends of their bums under lukewarm water to gently knock off the built up poops, and lightly towel off and low heat blow dry. The one that got it twice I put a tiny dab of Triple Antibiotic Ointment on/around the vent (not enough to mat the fluff down). Gotta make sure the bum is nice and fluffy again before putting them back with the other chicks though or they'll pick and poke at the little pink behind if they can see it. Anyway, getting carried away with this review. Enjoy your chickies!

8 of 10 chicks are perfect but the 1 chick...

i ordered 10 chicks, i will say very fast shipping, and all the babies came in alive. however, one of the chipmunk colored ones did pass about 2 days later. I'm guessing it was that whole failure to survive thing these little guys are known for. This is not why I i'm rating this 3 stars. We noticed that one of our gals has very bad scissor beak, she is still thriving, but this is a genetic abnormality, which tells me that they're not screening all their chickens who are breeding for abnormalities. makes me very disappointed because i thought hoover was better than that.

Dead chicks

The company who shipped the chickens sent them priority mail instead of overnight and they were kept at the airport for over 72 hours and froze to death

Disappointed, but happy with the hens I got.

I ordered these chicks back in March and they're grown now and laying. I wanted the easter egger or color egg layer hens. I ordered them bc they weren't available in store. The hens that I have are healthy, but all their eggs are the same color, but my biggest complaint is I ordered 10 hens that's girls that lay eggs in case tsc doesn't know, bc I received 5 roosters which I had to find homes for. I understand sometimes mistakes are made, but I have ordered in the past and never had an issue with getting roosters. So, beware this is the risk you take. I probably won't order from them again bc it turned into a big problem for me and tsc doesn't offer any refund.
