Q: Once it grows, would this grass be good for horses to graze?

1 Answer
  • A: GroundWork Landscapers Mix Grass Seed, South is not recommended for a primary horse grazing pasture. While its components are generally non-toxic, this specific blend is designed for quick lawn coverage rather than the nutritional and durability needs of horses. The tall fescue in standard lawn mixes often contains endophytes (fungi), which can cause serious reproductive issues in pregnant mares, such as "fescue toxicity".

Stays Green All Year - Even in West Texas!

We have used this grass seed since beginning the 25,000 square foot recreation area in our RV park in 2013. This grass mixture does great all year, whether the temperatures are in the 20's or in the 100's. We do have an in-ground irrigation system, which helps to keep it well hydrated, but while everyone else's Bermuda Grass is dying off, our lawn always looks wonderful. The only drawback we have found, is that each type of grass in the mix seems to find it's own microclimate in the lawn, and that's where each one thrives, sometimes giving our lawn a patchwork look of light and dark green areas. We overseed once or twice a year to help eliminate this.

Guaranteed to Grow, but NOT to Survive

I bought 2- 50 lb bags. Spent hours tilling the soil and spread Scott's starter fertilizer as directed. I followed the directions on the bag precisely. I had good growth within 3 days and was excited. I used a moisture meter on the soil to determine when I needed to water and watered the grass appropriately. Within 2 weeks, the grass had turned from brilliant green to bright orange and then it all died. Needless to say, the money wasted on this seed, the expensive fertilizer, water, and hours of time was infuriating. This seed can't handle northeast Florida heat and partial sun. Don't waste your time and money on this seed. I had to start all over again and used bahia seed. I now have a lush green lawn. If you are starting a new lawn in NE Florida, stick with bahia, you won't regret it.
