Q: Can tool be loaded with loose rings?

1 Answer
  • A: Hi, the DEWALT 11/16 in. Hog Ring Pliers Kit is designed for use with collated strips of hog rings, not loose rings. The pliers feature an automatic, spring-loaded magazine feed system that requires the rings to be in a strip, similar to a stapler.

Nothing But Trouble

These pliers are about the most useless tool I've ever used. First, the "galvanized" rings are most definitely not galvanized; they rust in a week being outdoors. The tool can't completely close the rings--they never touch together. Unless you are crimping two pieces of fencing at 90 degree angles (on the outside corner) it's VERY DIFFICULT to get the tool exactly in the right place to get the ring around any thing, and even then the rings don't close together. The pictures on the ring box are a lie! None of the packs of rings I've purchased will ever completely clamp together. The tool doesn't always feed the rings well; the tool unlocks and the rings fall out. This has happened to both pliers I've purchased. I thought maybe I got a defective one--nope! The tool design is defective.

I would buy again

When I first started using these I was so excited about them. I had previously been using an old rusted pair of hog ringer pliers that I found in my basement, and prior to that I had the ones that were sent to me by a company I purchased some of my fencing through, those were a nightmare and caused a significant amount of pain in my hands after only a short time. I did not know that for $40 I could buy a new pair that would be a breeze to use and cut the amount of time it takes to repair fencing down to a fraction of what it was taking previously. I would have given 5 stars for sure, however, after a couple weeks I have some issues with this product that I think, if addressed, could make them a 5 star product. They are super awkward to use unless you are only using them for straight forward clamping of two wires... its kind of hard to explain but the fact that the clamps come out the way they do is a poor design and can cause issues depending on what your project is. The other issues is how many rings are wasted due to the design of the pliers, but that is an issue with all. hog ringerers I have used. So they are extremely easy to use, I love that it does not hurt my hands at all! And other than that they have the same issues as other ones I have used. I think they are a solid 4 stars and would buy again.

Cheap

Dewalt made a horrible tool. They feel like they're bending and breaking in your hands. It frequently fails to eject the next ring, and it doesn't easily fit properly into the fencing spaces. We bought a pneumatic one under a different brand and it made things super easy.

Works fine for a one time job…rings get stuck frequently. Loading is not that easy. I needed it for one job of closing off a chicken run from varmints….made it thru the job but not something to use every day IMO

Limited use but handy for light duty projects

These are designed to work on small gauge wires. Such as 14-22 gauge (chicken wire, hardware cloth) and fabric. And light duty projects. It will not work attaching small gauge to larger gauge wires. The size of the head makes it impossible to get into the 1/2x1/2 or smaller hardware cloth unless you are attached a side panel to a top panel (90° angle). Small animal cages, chicken wire for pens and upholstery work. Works great on chicken wire regardless. As far as sharp points, these are designed to create a wraparound ⭕️ circle. The points come together so they are not able to catch on anything or cause harm to animals or fowl The wire is thin gauge and if not applied properly will pull apart. For what it is designed for, this works great. Loading the wire can be tricky, but so can loading a heavy duty stapler. The staple will stick together if the staples are not applied properly in the completed circle ⭕️ . Overall, it has its uses, though limited.

Yes, I recommend this product.

A lot of waste for so little work.

I've wasted a good 30% of my rings because the alignment of the individual ring (as the cartridge feeds along) allows the staple to pop loose and either fall out completely or twist and jam when you close the jaws. I'd the ring stays in place, the finished work is good. Otherwise, you're fighting to get the jammed ring out of the pliers. Also, the tab that is supposed to retain the strip inside the magazine pops loose and the magazine springs open, dropping your strip of rings onto the ground. Very poor product to have the DeWalt name attached to it. Disappointed.

Poor feeding and wasted staples

These pliers can be effective with practice but waste 50-75% of the staples due to improper feeding. I wish they were more reliable.

Awkward, choosing between unsafe or ineffective

The only way I can get this to work, is to turn the sharp end of the staples toward my face, and get close to the stapler to make sure that the pig fence wires are between the stapler's prongs, and then squeeze the stapler's grips to close the staple ring around the wires. Even then it works about 1/2 the time. I wind up picking staples out of the grass in an attempt to avoid metal poisoning (domestic ducks and geese).

No, I do not recommend this product.

Could not even get it to load correctly, much less function as pliers to squeeze hog rings. Like any of you, I do not have time to go through the hassle of returning things when I need the tool now. I won't be able to keep myself from resenting the work time I lose as I drive to a store, wait in line, then wait 3-5 days for the refund to appear-you know the drill.

No, I do not recommend this product.
