- A: It is recommended that however long the horse needs the hoof boot on, it should be checked every 24 hours that the boot is on. If there are longer periods without checking the boot, this can cause rubbing and lead to raw spots. For example, if the boot is left on for 5 days, it should be checked at least 5 times.3 years agoHelpful?

I just purchased this boot for my horse to wear during the day to keep her foot clean since she has an abscess. It is very durable, has a cushioned pad on the inside and fits her great. I did place a tube sock over her hoof & up her leg and also added a soft cloth and secured with vet wrap to prevent the stiff pvc from rubbing off her hair/skin. I tighten it with the velcro strap and also added more vet wrap to secure it on. It has stayed on and saved me from re-wrapping her foot everyday after soaking.

Opening not big enough

I was not able to use this even though I really needed a way to soak my horse's hoof for an abscess (He won't put his foot in a bucket. Thoroughbreds, amiright?). The bottom of the boot seems to have been large enough to put my horse's hoof into it, BUT even after completely unfastening the strap, the top of the boot was not. Well, it may have been large enough but the material was so stiff that I doubted it would go over the hoof - and even if it did, it would have required two hands to hold it open and put on the hoof. As you might expect, I returned it to the store. Something 2 or 3 sizes bigger might have worked but they didn't have any in stock and I already found a workaround (side note: get Animalintex pads really soaking wet, apply to hoof, wrap with vetrap, and cover with crosshatched duck tape. Abscess began draining in 24 hours).

As of November 2023, the Davis Plastics website is announcing a going out of business sale. If you are considering this product, get it now!
Also, it appears the "large" I received is a size 2 - and my big-footed girl needs a 3 so it didn't work for me. :-( But we're keeping it as it should be sized right for our other 2.
