Side Effects
Cosequin DS is incredibly safe for animals, but there are some potential side effects. Less than 2% of dogs may experience mild gastrointestinal upset. Some dogs might experience increased thirst. Side effects are more likely to occur if dosing instructions are not followed. When directions are closely followed, persistent effects are typically resolved by transitioning from loading dosage to maintenance dosage.

Glucosamine hydrochloride acts as a building block of cartilage by supplying a key nutrient that keeps cartilage cells healthy and functioning properly. Chondroitin sulfate blocks the enzymes that break down cartilage. Manganese ascorbate is added to help optimize the production of cartilage components. It also includes manganese, which helps in the formation of cartilage, to support the overall health and mobility of joints. This combination of ingredients helps maintain the cartilage structure and joint fluid. Glucosamine hydrochloride (derived from shellfish), sodium chondroitin sulfate (derived from bovine cartilage), gelatin, manganese ascorbate, mixed glycosaminoglycans, water, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, FD & C Blue #1, and FD & C yellow #5. Glucosamine Hydrochloride 500 mg, Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate 400 mg, Manganese 5 mg.
The recommended initial administration period is four to six weeks; however, some dogs may respond in a shorter period of time. The number of Cosequin DS capsules may then be reduced to the maintenance level. The capsules can be pulled apart and the contents sprinkled on the pet's food. Wet or moist food is preferred to ensure that the pet gets the entire amount. Once consistent improvement has been seen, these maintenance levels may be reduced to an every other day administration. The maintenance level can also be used long-term on healthy dogs to help support their joints.
