Hand Tools

Whether you’re building or just doing maintenance or repair work, having the right tools is key. Often, something as simple as a hand tool can make or break a project. That’s where Tractor Supply comes in; we’re your one-stop shop for a huge selection to help you get started on your next task.

Equipment for Everyone, Novice to Pro

Hand tools can help make nearly any DIY task easier — quick fixes around the farm, more serious home improvements and more. From individual tools to sets, we offer essentials such as:

Ratchets and Sockets

Working together to help you tighten and loosen nuts and bolts, ratchets and sockets are utilized practically everywhere, from car and equipment repairs to furniture assembly. When it comes to ratchets, their heads can be round, pear-shaped or otherwise, accommodating sockets that fit different fasteners and streamlining various jobs. Meanwhile, some sockets let you lengthen them with adapters and extensions, so you can access harder-to-reach fasteners more easily.

Wrenches

To help you turn, tighten or loosen larger parts with more force, our wrenches come in numerous types, including:

  • Box end wrenches, which have closed ends that offer a more dependable grip on circular fasteners
  • Adjustable wrenches and spanners, all-in-one tools that are open-ended and have movable jaws for gripping nuts and bolts of different sizes
  • Combination wrenches bringing together box-end and adjustable spanner functionality
  • Open end wrenches featuring U-shaped slots, ideal for flat-sided nuts and bolts in tight spaces
  • Pipe wrenches to simplify turning plumbing fittings
  • Torque wrenches allowing you to apply a specific amount of force to fasteners, helping to prevent overtightening
  • Crowfoot wrenches that reach tougher-to-access spots

Pliers

Used for gripping, bending, crimping and sometimes cutting, these feature jaws that make grabbing small parts easy, from wires and cables to nails and staples. Their handles provide the leverage you need, whether you’re repairing electronics or vehicles. Tongue-and-groove and slip-joint pliers can help you rotate, grip and pull irregularly shaped fasteners, while lineman and needle-nose pliers are for manipulating wires. If you need to clamp something more securely, use locking pliers or vise-grips.

Hammers and Striking Tools

Use a hammer or sledge hammer to help drive nails, stakes, tapered wedges or other tools into materials and pull nails and other fasteners out of them. Other striking tools, from axes to mauls to mattocks, come in handy for a variety of projects or professional tasks, including demolitions, blacksmithing and carpentry.

Screwdrivers and Nut Drivers

If you can imagine a screw to turn, a bolt to tighten, or a nut to secure, then most likely, there’s a screwdriver or nut driver to fit it. Find yourself having to turn a slotted screw, and you should choose a flathead screwdriver; if the screwhead's cross-shaped, opt for a Phillips head screwdriver. Other kinds fit hex, Robertson and smaller, finer screws, such as those on hinges. Offset screwdrivers can make it easier to get into cramped spaces, while combo-tip screwdrivers are designed to fit screws with more than one kind of head, such as those in breaker panels.

Saws and Cutters

If you need to precision-cut thin, lightweight, flexible materials, such as paper, fabric or carpet or vinyl flooring, scissors are your go-to tool. Snips and side cutters can slice sheet metal for heating and AC ducts, or in electrical applications, to strip insulation and shear wiring. Bolt cutters can clip fencing and accessories, such as padlocks and chains, plus construction and utility materials ranging from rebar to grounding rods. When you want to cut wood, PVC or composite boards or some other rigid material, and you’re looking for a convenient alternative to a power tool, consider a hand saw.

Clamping and Fastening Tools

Encompassing everything from vises and clamps to magnets, staplers and riveters, these are helpful in DIY, manufacturing and construction projects alike. They secure tools and materials in place so you can work on them more easily. Some can also join various materials together, including wood, plastic and metal.

Chisels, Punches and Files

Rivet, shape and cut a wide range of materials with these hand tools. Punches can make impressions for hammering, screwing or drilling fasteners, while files can help take sharp edges off wood and metal quickly. On the other hand, use a chisel if you want to make mortise and tenon joints.

Grease and Lubrication Tools

Use these to apply lubricants to moving mechanical parts, whether they are bearings, gears or joints in your power tools or farm equipment. If you need to lube at high pressure somewhere hard to reach, consider using a grease gun, but for loosening smaller parts, dispensing oil from a can is often sufficient. Lubricating bigger machines may call for using a pump. A caulk gun can apply thicker lubricants or sealants more easily, but to move liquids in and out of gearboxes, crankcases and other systems, you may want to use a suction gun.

Measuring and Layout Tools

No matter the project, you’ll need these tools to help you make accurate marks and precise measurements. While levels can help make building materials align properly, both horizontally and vertically, carpenter squares and angle finders are key to getting cants and corners right. Use tape measures and wheels to figure longer distances, especially outdoors. Identify critical areas including utility lines and survey points during tasks using tape, marking paint or flags and utensils including a pencil, chalk, markers or a scriber.

Knives and Tools

Trim, score and slit boxes, drywall, brush, trees and more, plus maintain your blades between jobs. We stock knives, axes and saws you can use in everything from crafting and hobbies to food prep and camping or dressing game. Other tools, including whetstones and rods, help keep edges sharp at home and in the field.

Tap and Die

Use a set of these for metalworking or to help you fix furniture or a car. A tap can thread a hole, while a die can thread a bolt or rod. Together, they can make using fasteners to join metal, plastic or wood easier.

Wrecking and Pry Bars

These are ideal for leveraging heavy objects and breaking down materials, making them perfect for demolition work. Take baseboards, trim and moldings off walls, yank out fasteners and pull up tiles during remodels with less effort.

Multi-Tools and Hex Keys

Do practically any small task with a multi-tool, whether that’s cutting rope, gripping nails, tightening or loosening screws, measuring short distances or opening bottles, cans or other containers. Hex keys are just as versatile, as they are made for tightening and loosening bolts and screws on everything from bicycles to furniture.

Grabbing and Pick-Up Tools

If you find yourself frequently struggling to reach small parts or tools, whether on the floor of your workshop or top shelf of your garage, one of these can help you grab the items you need.
