Hi Bob, we want to install a 1550 gal tank for our spa and potable water use, we are high desert so we have high summer temps and winds, and sometimes snow. How do we protect the tank and water?

Asked by: WyldWest
Hi WyldWest, The tank will weigh over 12,000 lbs. when full (about 200 lbs. when empty). The tank can withstand temperatures up to 120 degrees F and below freezing temperatures for prolonged periods as well. If you can shelter the tank from the elements that will certainly help prolong it's useful life. Feel free to call me directly with questions. Thanks, Bob 952-446-8807

Is it OK to paint the tank with exterior latex paint? Will the paint help protect the tank from UV?

Asked by: paul113
Hi Paul. If possible, it may be less messy and expensive to place your tank in the shade. However, based on information that distributors and customers have given us, to prepare the tank for painting, wipe it down with a paint thinner to remove any oily residue. The paint that seems to adhere the best is an automotive urethane which is commonly used to paint car bumpers. Keep in mind that over time, as a tank expands and contracts, the paint will usually crack and will need to be reapplied. Norwesco accepts no responsibility for any detrimental effect that paint may have on the tank. Feel free to call me with any questions. Thanks, Bob 952-446-8807

With the tank being dark plastic, how would one know when the water level drops low enough to need filling again without running out of water? I'm planning on placing it in a windowless, insulated shed to keep it from freezing.

Asked by: TP Goat Farm
Hi TP Goat Farm. Most folks add a sight gauge along the outside of the tank. To accomplish this, a fitting is installed near the top of the tank and one near the bottom with a clear piece of tubing connected to each - allowing the fluid to travel up and down the tubing as the tank fills and empties. You can Google examples, but you are certainly welcomed to call me if you need assistance. Thanks, Bob 952-446-8807

I plan to put the 1550 black water tank on the ground. I understand it will weigh about 12,000 lbs when full of water. What kind of a concrete pad do you recommend that I build to support it ( how wide, how thick, what kind of wire to put in the cement.

Asked by: cgeorge
Hello cgeorge, we suggest that you work with either a local contractor / city inspector / architect who will be familiar with city code and soil types. With this information, they will be able to recommend a cement slab thickness that will withstand the necessary lbs. per square inch required to hold a full tank. Feel free to call me if you have further questions. Thanks, Bob 952-446-8807

1. Would an overhang help protect the tank from direct sun & possible freezing snow? & 2. what products are needed to keep the water drinkable? 3. what kind of pump is recommended for extracting water? 4. whats the difference between the white and dark?

Asked by: WyldWest
Hi WyldWest, Our resins are protected with UV inhibitors, but anything to limit exposure to direct sunlight will extend the life of the tank. Limiting direct sunlight will also reduce (but not eliminate) the potential for algae buildup as well. Black tanks (vs. white) limit the amount of sunlight that can penetrate a tank, so that is why they are used for potable water applications. You should consult your local health department about ways to keep your water clean and drinkable. Also, we don't consult on pumps, but any local farm or plumbing store should be able to help you out. TSC sells pumps for extracting water as well. Feel free to call me with questions. What is the problem with burying this tank in an area that will have no traffic?

Asked by: COWater
All of our tanks are specifically engineered for above ground use only, meaning that they are engineered for the pressure to force upon them from the inside out. IF any of these tanks are buried, even partially it most likely will void the warranty completely.

Can we put this tank under ground?

Asked by: Sirberton
Hi Sirberton. Tanks specifically designed for above ground use CANNOT be put underground. If it is put below ground, the weight of the earth around the tank will cause the walls to collapse. However, Norwesco does make septic and cistern tanks that are designed to be buried. You can find them at Norwesco.com and if you find a tank that you like, speak to your TSC store manager and they can "special order" it for you. Thanks, Bob 952-446-8807

Can I mount a 4" submersible pump in a 1500 gal norwesco water storage tank?

Asked by: Robert norcal
Hi Robert, You may want to verify your schematic with a local plumber to ensure proper venting, etc. However, there is no reason you couldn't use a submersible pump in our tank. Feel free to call me with any questions. Thanks, Bob 952-446-8807

Can I fill my storage tank from the bottom port with my well pump?

Asked by: Robert norcal
Hi Robert, You can fill the tank from the bottom port. The blue cap in the middle of the lid is a venting mechanism - you'll want to make sure that it is clear of debris. Please call me directly with any questions. . Thanks, Bob 952-446-8807

Does the drain have an open/close mechanism? Also, can you attach a garden hose to the drain?

Asked by: SandiK
Hi Sandi, The tank doesn't come with on/off control. However, the tank outlet is installed with a 2" bulkhead fitting w/ female threads. You can easily plumb using the following components. Attach Norwesco's 2" compact bolted ball valve (62286 M x F), next plumb 2" x 3/4" reducer fitting (62195 M x F), then you'll need 3/4" M x 3/4" GHT (garden hose thread) pipe nipple. We don't carry garden hose pipe nipples, but any local plumbing store will handle. Feel free to call with any questions. Thanks, Bob 952-446-8807

THIS TANK CAN SIT ON LEVEL GROUND, CORRECT?  IS CONCRETE NECESSARY?

Asked by: AEROCAT
Hi Aerocat. Here are some basic guidelines to follow when placing your tank. Inspect the surface to ensure a smooth, level area that will supply full bottom support. A properly constructed concrete pad that is capable of supporting the contents of the tank is the best support and is recommended above 2,000 gallons. Other materials such as very flat blacktop, or contained, packed sand or pea gravel have been used successfully. All surfaces must maintain uniform support through freeze/thaw, erosion and other disturbances. Feel free to call me if you have further questions. Thanks, Bob 952-446-8807

Does this block out all light so that green algae will not grow inside?

Asked by: JBerrie
No, it only limits light penetration to reduce the growth of waterborne algae.
