Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shelter bedding We bought this to put in a feral cat shelter outside our home. We also put out a heated water bowl and dry food. We couldn't stand the thought of animals suffering through the polar vortex.
Date published: 2019-02-20
Rated 1 out of 5 by from full of seeds Used for a sheet mulching project. After smothering everything with layers of cardboard, manure and two kinds of straw, ended up with a hay field.
Date published: 2019-02-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cats love it I bought this to add to my outdoor cat houses for the winter. Yes it's not the conventional use, but nobody said my review couldn't be about stray cats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good straw at good price Easy to transport, lightweight, and a lot more straw than you'd think despite the size of the package! Ducks and chicks love it!
Date published: 2018-04-24
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good stuff It was perfect for what I needed it for. I used it to cover some bare spots in my lawn because I have dogs and they always seem to play in the muddiest part of the yard. this covers that area and soaks up the water when it rains.
Date published: 2018-03-20
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bedding Hard to get out of package. Like for ckixken nesting boxes.
Date published: 2018-02-24
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointment in garden Had hoped this would work in garden for mulching strawberries and other garden beds, but is full of seed that germinated. Is hay, not straw. Would probably work OK for its intended use as bedding, but is not appropriate for garden use as straw.
Date published: 2017-06-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! Easy to work with and easy to clean out of the chicken coop!
Date published: 2016-07-26
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome!! Decided to try this isn't of regular straw for our chickens. Very easy to clean and a lot less waste! Going to try this on our sheep and mares when they foal. :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from not bad, but better then most I am using this for outside rabbit bedding. On a cold December day in December, about 35 degrees F, it feels very warm. Kinda dusty though
Date published: 2015-12-20
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for guinea pigs I have been using this for a couple weeks and my guinea pigs seem to love it for comfort. It is also easy to clean by scooping the wet areas. Does not stink and is super soft. Doesn't stick to feet or get in food bowls.

Would this work to mulch around garden plants?

Asked by: Mandan
Yes, this would work great. Chopped straw works well in gardens because the shorter lengths allow it to break down faster and make it easier to arrange around your plants. Plus, the Standlee Premium Western Forage Certified Chopped Straw is certified noxious weed free.

I need chopped straw for bedding my donkeys.  Can I use your chopped straw?  Says not for equines in description. Will this hurt my donkeys?

Asked by: Rudee
The Standlee Chopped straw is fine to use for donkey bedding. Some people use straw in a donkey’s daily diet, as it doesn’t compact a donkey like it can an equine.

I have been looking for a straw to use as a supplement for my donkeys. Is this the product for me or do you suggest a different product?

Asked by: Sherry60
Thank you for your inquiry. The Standlee Straw is safe for donkey’s consumption. An equine’s digestive system is much different in how they break down feed and process it than a donkey. Straw in an equines diet can cause compaction, therefore we do not recommend it be used for horses. The main crop that we use for our straw is Barley, as Wheat is not a crop that is grown in large quantities in Idaho. We do not mix the products, it is either Barley or Wheat Straw that is in the bales, we manufacture one product at a time and ship out that product. Wheat straw is very fibrous and has lower energy values. Thank you

Can this be used as mulch for tomato plants?

Asked by: llan
Thank you for your question. Standlee Premium Western Forage does not claim our straw as organic, as we do use an herbicide which is applied in the fall before the growing season. We also do have to use a Pesticide some years, not every year as insects usually come in every other two or three years. Most customers concerned about this are worried that the residual. The residuals on these two products are very short and there is no concern for the product carrying over when we harvest. We do have several people who use our products for their gardens, compost, etc., all in which have had great results. Standlee’s straw is Certified Noxious Weed Free, however it is not guaranteed seed free. Some of the seeds from the wheat/barley plant can be in the compressed straw bales, therefore there is a possibility that you will have wheat or barley sprouts in the location in which the straw is spread.

How well would this work in a dog kennel on pavement? Would it cover the ground and be absorbent ? Looking for a pine alternative.

Asked by: CCS19
Thank you for your questions. The Certified Straw does absorb some moisture, however, where your dogs are on pavement, we do not feel that it would absorb a large quantity. The straw works great in dog houses for warmth and bedding. Thank you
