Item Information

The SportDOG Brand In-Ground Fence System is a simple and cost-effective alternative to a traditional fence. Safe and effective for all dogs over 10 pounds, the SportDOG Brand In-Ground Fence System's transmitter is powerful enough to cover up to 100 acres of land. Installation is as simple as burying the wire around the perimeter of your yard and plugging in the transmitter. The system is expandable to include any number of dogs with the purchase of additional collar receivers. Follow the training instructions included with your SportDOG Brand In-Ground Fence System to get your dog acquainted with his new boundaries and he will be staying safely in your yard in no time!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Decision We are so happy with our Sport Dog Unit. We had the wire underground already. We had a different system. We had very poor support from our rep.. it was difficult getting battery replacements. We switched out the transmitter with the Sport Dog transmitter and put the new collar on out dog. She now gets a warning beep before crossing the line. She is complying so much better and we are very pleased. Our only regret is we didn't go with the Sport Dog first!!

I have a culvert under my driveway. My guess is roughly 18" - 24" below the surface. Rather than cut a hole in my driveway, can I simply run the wire through the culvert? Thank you.

Asked by: Jeff603
Thank you for your question! You may place the wire in a culvert as long as it does not have any metal as support. The metal may cause interference with the signal, creating a opening your dog may be able to get out of.

What gauge is the wire. Can I buy more as needed

Asked by: Skip z 933
Thanks for your question! Our In-Ground Fence kit includes 1000' of 20 gauge, solid core, burial-grade wire. Additionally, we do sell extra wire by both the 500' and 150' spool.

Does it still work properly if you do not bury the wire? I am interested in leaving mine on top of the ground and letting the pinestraw or leaves eventually cover it

Asked by: Dawgs
Great question! The fence will function if the wire is placed above the ground, but as the wire is exposed it may be damaged over time by wild animals and weather. The wire is graded for burial, and is best protected when 2-3 inches under the soil.

How big of a dog will the collar deliver a shock too? Ie: dog weight and type..lab,mastiff,Hound Dog.

Asked by: mitch85
Thank you for your question! The receiver collar will provide a static correction to all breed and sizes of dogs and has adjustable correction strength levels so that you can find the right setting for your particular dog. The effectiveness of the static correction as a deterrent depends far more on the demeanor of your dog than the breed/size/weight. If your dog is timid and/or easily trained, it should not take long at all to have them trained to stay within the boundaries. However, if you have a more stubborn dog who is difficult to train, it may take a bit longer and require a higher correction level setting in order to contain them within the area.

Just how waterproof is the collar itself? Every other perimeter collar I have tried that claimed to be water proof has failed due to water damage. My dog loves the water obviously lol.

Asked by: CraigR52
Thank you for your question, Craig! Our In-Ground Fence Receiver Collar is completely waterproof and your dog can absolutely swim while wearing this collar.

Can the wire be run in pvc conduit and still work?

Asked by: 68 delmont
Hi there! You can certainly run the wire through PVC to offer it more protection. It is worth mentioning that this is a radio frequency running through the wire so we recommend to avoid putting it near any metal to avoid interference in your boundary.

Is this main box rain proof

Asked by: Mike br549
Thanks for your question, Mike! The transmitter unit is not weatherproof and would need to be installed indoors in a dry,well-ventilated area where the temperature does not drop below freezing.

We bought a house on a lake and only want to set up a boundary on three sides of our property leaving the lake side accessible for our dogs. Is this possible with your product

Asked by: Fitcon19
Thank you for your question! This is certainly possible, however it would require an alternate wire layout called a "double loop". Because the wire must be set up in one continuous loop, with both ends of the wire returning into the transmitter unit, you would basically create a long "bubble" shape along the 3 sides of your property (keeping the two sides of the wire at least 3-5' apart from one another). If you'd like more information about this type of wire layout, please feel free to reach out to us at the number 1-800-732-0144 and we'll be glad to assist you!

My yard is about .14 of an acre will a wired dog fence work for you or is it going to be too small of an area because of the warning areas and how close do they have to get before they get the warning toner shocked or whatever it is

Asked by: Davido
Hi there David, that's a great question! For that small of an area, you may not find that the coverage will allow enough room for your pet to roam freely within the containment zone. For assistance with your layout and to determine what will maximize your property area, please reach out to our Customer Care Team at 1-800-732-0144.

Is it for stubborn dogs? That are big.

Asked by: Maylee70
Thank you for this question! The receiver collar included with this kit has 4 levels of static stimulation to match any dogs’ temperament along with a tone/vibration only level. The static levels work well for pets that are harder to train or are stubborn.

Is there anyway of having a battery back up on the transmitter? Our power surges a lot so will it kick back on when the power comes back on??

The SportDOG Transmitter does not have a battery backup option. It may be helpful to utilize an uninterruptible power supply for your system!

Will this work in the winter when there is 2 feet of snow on the ground?

Asked by: Steve1227
Thank you for your question, Steve! Yes, as long as the buried wire is still intact and not damaged, it should have no trouble sending its signal through the snow, though you may need to turn up the range dial on the transmitter a bit in order to make up for the extra 2 feet that's been added to the ground level above the wire.

Can the wire be attached to a existing fence/t posts and buried across the driveway? What type of material is the color made of?

Asked by: T Owens
Thank you for your question! The wire can certainly be attached to an existing fence and run across your driveway as well. Keep in mind, however, that metal objects always have the potential to create interference in the radio signal sent out from the wire and, while we have a very large number of customers who attach the wire directly to fences which have metal components (such as chain link) and never have issues, we do recommend testing thoroughly to ensure that interference is not an issue before making a more "permanent" install of your boundary wire. The receiver box on the collar is made of a hard plastic, with metal screws and metal contact points, while the collar strap is a polyurethane-coated nylon.

Can this be buried in a detention pond and a wet area?

Asked by: Crustyrusty
Thank you for your question! The wire can certainly be buried in a pond. Please keep in mind that depending on the depth of the pond, this will reduce the overall reach of the signal in that area and you may need to turn the boundary dial up to compensate.

Asked by: rcurlylocks

The specs say this fence can accommodate up to 100 acres. Does that mean that everything in this kit will get me a 100 acre cover? If not then the specs of this item are confusing as it says 1000' of wire and the system can cover up to 100 acres.

Asked by: jstak
Thank you for your question! While the system can enclose up to 100 acres, the fence kit includes 1000' of wire, which is enough to enclose a little under 2 acres. Additional wire can then be purchased to enclose a wider area. The system is compatible with insulated copper wire between 14-20 gauge in thickness.

If I were to burry the wire inside of pvc would it affect the connection with the collar?

Asked by: Mcormier
What a great question! You can certainly place the wire inside of PVC pipe to offer it more protection. The signal from the wire will not be hindered by the PVC when buried. We recommend burying the wire about 1-4 inches deep.

If I have two different dog collars can each collar be on a different strength? My small dog would not need as strong a shock as my big dog.

Asked by: ashyb
Thanks for your question! You can indeed do this; each receiver collar has 5 correction strength settings that are set individually of one another by using a button on the receiver collars.

I have an old in-ground system currently underground. Will the old wires interfere with this system?

Asked by: Namron1966
That's a great question! If the old boundary wire will be within 5 feet of the new boundary wire, it may cause interference with the system. If this is the case, we would recommend pulling up the old to avoid inconsistencies.

Does the wire need to create a complete loop?

Asked by: Blad
Thanks for your question! The boundary wire does need to be run in one continuous loop in order to function correctly. However, if you need to block off, for example, just 1, 2 or 3 sides of your yard rather than all 4, there is an alternate type of layout called a double loop which can achieve this. In addition, there are ways to cancel out the signal along certain portions of the boundary line, so the type and shape of boundary wire layouts that you can set up is quite flexible.
