Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this product We've been using this for 6 years and it's never let us down. We've been able to eliminate additional calcium. Egg shells are just as they should be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extra Omega for your Eggs I have used this off and on with my chickens. It has a different smell to it then the regular Layena. My chickens eat it, but they like the regular a little better. Not sure we needed the extra Omega in our eggs so we feed the regular. Cost was also an issue - BUT we tried another brand's Omega and the Purina was far superior for smell and palatability.

Let them free range to their hearts content, knowing they will always return home to their coop for a delicious supper featuring more Layena+ Omega-3. They will reward you with the most delicious eggs you've ever had.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My hens love this feed! I was using another brand, I was noticing the girls weren't eating as much as I thought they should. Their egg shells were very thin. I talked to my local feed store and they recommend layena with oyster strong. I began to notice a difference in the amount eaten and eventually the strength of the eggs. Plus it saves me from buying oyster shells separately.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We love Layen+ Omega3! I started feeding my chickens solely Layena a few months back I’m not only happy with the quality of my eggs from using this feed but overall quality of health of my chicken. Their feathers came in so beautifully!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hens are extra friendly When I bought this, I didn't think it would make a difference, wow was I wrong. My girls are happier, and friendlier, and when they see me coming they are extra excited. If that wasn't enough, I have noticed the yolks are a beautiful dark orange, and I haven't found a broken egg since I started using Layena. They eat more, because it is so much better, and I think they produce more too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from i saw the change in a week When I brought some new hens into my flock they looked, well okay. They were happy and just fine. However, after the first week of eating Layena, I swear I could see an improvement in them- they were lively and happy, and they sang more. I guess that is about as good as it gets for a chicken. Like I said they were fine before - they were eating a brand from a large Supply store. Once they were here and eating Layena- they blossomed. The eggs are top notch, and ever hen layed everyday in the winter in Georgia!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I switched I was in a discussion group about brands and what all were feeding their flock. I was using another brand. A few of us made a decision to switch food and re evaluate in 3 months time. Layena Omega was chsoen. I am amazed by the plumage difference in my flock and just the general overall look of each hen!

The description says no need to supplement with grit. Is this statement correct, I don't need to offer grit to my hens if on this feed?

Asked by: thisjed
Thanks for your inquiry. That is correct! If you are feeding the Layena as a sole diet, there is no need to offer any grit. If the hens are offered a type of scratch grain, cracked corn, or free range where they also may eat insects and other food items, then we suggest to have grit offered.

can I feed this to quail?

The Layena is not formulated for gamebirds. We have the Gamebird Breeder Layena that we suggest to feed to quail.

I will be getting laying hens for a school project, is this feed good for them. How different is this type of feed than to normal chicken feed?

Asked by: emilys11
This is a great product for your project. The difference in this when compared to other layer feed is the Omega-3 fatty acid content. When fed this product with increased amounts of Omega-3, it is passed into the egg. This benefit is for human consumption where each egg will contain at least 250 mg Omega - 3. The product will need to be fed continuously for 3 weeks to deliver this result. And, this amount is based on a large egg (50 g). Let us know if you have any additional questions.

I have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease. If my chickens are fed this product do they lay gluten free eggs?

Asked by: ACOV
Thanks for contacting Purina. All eggs are gluten free. If the gluten protein was in the feed it would be broken down to individual amino acids (the basic building blocks of proteins), which are very small, short-chain fragments that are no longer gluten. Therefore, the eggs are gluten free and cause no concern for your family.

Will they need oyster shell on the side or does this provide enough calcium?

Asked by: Eggie1
If feeding Layena Plus Omega at the rate of at least 90% of their total diet, then it should be providing enough calcium for the laying hen's needs. If you are feeding scratch grains and/or table scraps, but at more than 10% of their total diet per day, then this will dilute the formula and possibly not meet the protein, vitamin and/or mineral requirements of the bird.

I Birmingham Roller Pigeons I feed their omega-3 pellets to them it produces good looking birds and Performing Birds. Only problem I have is that makes their droppings really messy and smelly anything I can add to dry out the droppings

Asked by: B davis
Thanks for your question. There is really not anything that can be added to "dry out" droppings from a feed standpoint. However, focus on increasing the ventilation around your birds. Loose droppings can be a result of increased water consumption. If the birds are too hot, they are going to drink more water. Keeping the birds cool will decrease water intake and, hopefully, offer you a drier feces.

We feed as complete diet with occasional scraps and garden clippings.  Incubated eggs from hens and only 5% hatched. rest  fully formed chicks but did not hatch. Does this feed make  shells too hard for  chicks to hatch?  Should I use  Different feed?

Asked by: Henpeck2
Thanks for choosing Purina. The layer products will have additional calcium to support a harder egg shell, but this will not inhibit the chick from being able to break through the shell while hatching. In some research difficulty of breaking and emerging from shell could be related to humidity being too low during incubation.
