Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love in a Bag My 31 year old mare was losing weight despite several feedings of another product per day. She choked on sweet feed so required a different supplement. As long as she gets 2 feedings a day she continues to keep weight on and acts happy and frisky. I'm grateful for this product and its effects on my senior mare.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Someone Stole My Thin Mare My veterinarian told me I need to find a senior feed for my 25 year old mare. She was down in weight (900 lbs). I researched Senior Feeds. I found Purina Senior. I like how it was balance just for my horses age. I started this process one year ago. Two weeks ago my mare had her annual Vet visit. She now weighs (1200lbs). She has a beautiful glowing coat. From a distance she looks like a 5 year old mare. This is nothing short of a miracle. I will never feed cheap off brand feeds again. I'm sticking with Purina. They've done the research and formulation that makes their feeds great!!!

He was so fat but happy, all the kids were still riding him. i just wanted to say thank you purina equine senior for helping him live his life to its fullest.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked for me! My 15yo QH mare was not looking as good as she should have last summer. I switched her to this feed after several months of trying all sorts of other feeds and supplements. She is looking much much better along her topline, and I am most pleased. I will be switching my Shetland to the mix for Mini's and Ponies. She is currently on a low starch, low sugar feed, but I do want to try this feed for her.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Senior purina I have fed horses for over 65 years. Have owned as many as 50 horses at one time. Bred Quarter and Paints and showed in both breeds. Always fed the best feed i could buy in my area. Purina was always at the top of my list. Either had them on grass pastures in the summer and quality coastal and alfalfa in the winter. Thanks for making a quality product for my friends

I’m considering switching from another senior feed because my horse is not maintaining his weight. Their fat content is 8%. My concern is yours is 5.5% fat. I want to add weight. Your thoughts?

Asked by: Ts Mom
Thanks for choosing Purina. The fat is a bit lower intentionally due to this being a complete ration (replacing hay/pasture) if needed. A senior aged horse eating our Purine Equine Senior at the rate of 15-20 lbs. per day (or more), does not need a fat percentage of 8% in a diet. If you are feeding it at a lesser rate and want to boost the fat, we have the Amplify supplement that may be added as a top dress. The Amplify is 30% fat. Or, if you prefer to feed a Senior product and does not replace hay, the Equine Senior Active is available at Purina dealers, but is not typically sold through the Tractor Supply Company stores. Equine Senior Active contains 10% fat. Feel free to call us if you have additional questions.

I have a older mini mare that has cushings&heaves. Currently I feed Nutrena Safechoice special care (low starch) feed and soaked alfalfa cubes Would you recommend this Senior Complete feed for her ? She's only about 350lbs and lost weight.

Asked by: kcassell
Thanks for choosing Purina. Yes, the Equine Senior would be a perfect product for your horse's needs. You may use it to replace all hay and only feed the Senior (omitting the alfalfa cube addition if you wish). When feeding Senior as a complete with roughage diet, the minimum to feed is 1.3 lbs. for each 100 lbs. in body weight. For a 350 lb. mini that would be at least 4.6 lbs. of Senior each day. This is best to split into two or more meals. You may increase as necessary for additional calorie support. Let us know if you have any additional questions.

Can Equine Senior be fed to an emaciated rescue mini horse. She is 3 years old and weighs 110 lbs. I have started her on Purina horse and pony feed with a top dressing of Nutrena Boost.

Asked by: Country woman
Yes, Equine Senior may be fed to any mature horse (or at least 2 years of age). If younger than 2 yrs, we would suggest the Equine Junior. Feel free to call us and we can discuss feeding directions when using this product. We also have this link that would be appropriate for your miniature horse as well. https://www.purinamills.com/horse-feed/education/detail/refeeding-the-malnourished-horse

how much do you feed per day?

Asked by: mikeaj1
There are two types of feeding rates with the Purina Equine Senior. One is suggested when fed with hay/pasture. The other feeding rate is to when fed as the sole diet replacing all hay and pasture. Both of these may be found on our product page online. The minimum to feed along with hay is 0.6 lbs. per 100 lbs. in body weight (6 lbs. per day for a 1000 lb. horse eating at least 12 lbs. of hay/roughage per day). The minimum to feed as the sole diet is 1.3 lbs. for each 100 lbs. in body weight (13 lbs. per day for a 1000 lb. horse). Feel free to call us if you have any additional questions.

Does this horse feed need to be soaked in water? Can it be dry?

Will this feed help with muscle mass? My horse is 25 and has lost a lot of back muscle. Also i ride him several times a week. Would the purina senior active feed be better for him?

Asked by: Mustangirl7
Thanks for choosing Purina. This would be a question that is better answered by one of our experts. We would like to have more detail about his current feeding program to suggest which product is best. Could I feed it every other day?

Asked by: Katie O1
We suggest the best practice is daily feeding of a product to ensure you do not have any digestive issues. If the product is fed in a large volume, then splitting into two meals is preferred. However, if this is not feasible, then every other day is better than none at all. You want to be certain to avoid any aggressive eating and make certain you are not feeding if the horse is in a "starved" state. This may cause the horse to consume too quickly.
