Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for a back porch in Texas I bought this fan planning to use it on our back porch enabling to spend more 'outdoor' time. This fan did not perform as I had hoped. It does not put out enough 'cooler' air unless you sit directly next to it. Beyond 3 feet there is no breeze to cool you. It is very expensive to use in a Texas climate. It also has a lot of 'directions' to follow. "Never leave it plugged in except for during use. You need a water hose attached to it. Turn off motor and let fan run for awhile before turning fan off." It has to sit on a completely level surface or water will splash everywhere from the condenser. But it does have wheels with locks so you can push (not lift) it around to find a level surface on your patio.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Made,,Almost I bought this to keep my pooches cooler when we need to leave for a while and they have to stay home. Works will and is well made. The only problem I have is water wants to drip out the back and onto the patio. I need to try and modify the deflector at the top of the pads to keep the water inside. It’s been a 100 + and when a do my yard work on the weekend I now have a place I can cool down outside instead of going in the house.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Helps beat the heat It does help beat the heat. Portable, can move it around the shop or patio to where it's needed. Can hook up a hose or just use the water tank which makes it even more flexible to use.

Explain using ice or iced water (or not) in Portacool units. Unit to be used outdoors on covered porches/verandas in central TX heat, 100 degrees, some humidity.  Considering Portacool 110 or 2000.

Asked by: GG42
Portacools cool through the evaporative cooling process. This happens as the pump distributes water through the media/filter and then the fan motor pulls the air through the wet/damp filter. We have no evidence that using ice will help the water evaporate more quickly. We do not recommend that you use ice because it is possible that it could be sucked into the water pump and cause damage to the pump. I just purchased a portacool model which cost 599. From Tractor Supply.  Fill the tank with water ....turn it on ...water flows over the pads and drips on the patio.  What’s up?

Asked by: WinonaL
If the water is dripping onto your patio, it sounds like the water adjustment valve is probably up too high. Usually if you turn that adjustment valve down, it will fix the problem. If this does not help, please contact us at customer service (800) 695-2942.

Can you keep a water hose connected to it as opposed to filling the reservoir?

Asked by: Glt4570
Yes. The unit has a hose connection and a inlet float, so if you leave it on a water hose connection, it will keep the water level where it needs to be and you do not have to monitor it or manually fill it with water.

can this unit drop the temperature from 70 degrees to 60% in a basement wine cellar?

Asked by: Bobby3456
Portable evaporative coolers work based on their ability to evaporate tap water. For the products to be most effective, fresh, non-conditioned air needs to be introduced. The ideal environment is outdoors or in very large open air facilities like barns, garages or shops. A basement wine cellar does not sound ideal, but if there was proper ventilation and the humidity was low, some temperature drop could be expected. The temperature drop will be much more dramatic, the higher the temperature or the lower the humidity.

How will "hard" water affect the unit?

Asked by: Harvick Fan
Hard water can be difficult on the unit's internal pump and the media/filters. It usually leaves a lot of calcium and mineral deposits behind which can build up, harden, and clog up the unit. If you have hard water, we recommend that you regularly drain and clean the unit including taking out the filters and cleaning them. You can also get an inlet filter to put on your water supply and/or we make a preventative treatment that you can put in the water tank once a month that is meant to help keep the calcium and mineral deposits for hardening.

Approx how long will this unit run before it needs to be refilled with water?

Asked by: AnnPat
This unit has a 10 gallon water capacity and uses approximately 2 gallons per hour. It can usually go 4.5-5 hours without being refilled.
