Rated 5 out of 5 by from Older Mare My aged mare has Cushings and Nutrena Special Care was recommended by my Vet. She has been on this feed for over 10 years and her levels remain within normal limits. Very happy with this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome feed! We have a gelding that has a metabolic disorder(basically horse diabetes), has foundered in the past and had laminitis. Our vet had us put him on a low starch feed and Nutrena Safechoice Special Care works great! Having his issues and having to watch his weight are top priorities for his care and this feed allows us to do so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect For Horses Needing Lower NSC One of my horses is very very picky. She's a senior and isn't fond of beet pulp, which is in most senior feeds. It's hard to find a feed she'll eat that is low in NSC, but Special Care is one that she actually seems to love! She happily munches on this, so I can sneak in about 30% of her senior feed to help with her forage needs. I feed this to all my horses except my super easy keeper who only gets a ration balancer. An added bonus is that this is a really affordable feed too.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Special Care Average feed I needed to add vitamins to the feed for better results.
Date published: 2020-05-02
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ideal for those ‘fat on air types.’ My easy keepers fine the feed palatable and offers everything they need without the extra calories. Ideal for those ‘far off air types.’

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Experts "Weigh" In! Our older, laminitic mares do well on this feed. It is palatable and they are shiny, and in good condition, while helping them to keep their weight down.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job As a low starch low carb feed it is doing its job. Used Purina before and was happy with it but the mittens product was more consistently available Maintaining my EMS horse satisfactory in BC, and energy. This particular horse is an upper level show horse in moderate work. He eats the feed, although I am pretty sure he would prefer a Sr or grain based. Not gonna happen. TSC had the feed available. I will comment that the pellet quality is sub par. There are a lot of f fines in the bag. I just wet it down to eleviate the dust.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Carousel The low starch and low carb contents help with my PPID, cresty horse. She loves the feed, and has helped well in meeting her issues.

Date published: 2020-04-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Keeper I had an issue with my horses hooves. Through research and comparison this feed had the lowest starch content. After switching to this feed (she is also an easy keeper) it helped her to slow her eating to a normal pace and aided in the treatment to clear up her problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from See what White Zimfandel, aka Spot eats! I've been eating SafeChoice for years. I'm a 3/4 Arab mare that has cushings and lamanitis. Show me a grain of oats and corn, and I can put on 50 pounds. SafeChoice lets me eat more feed and helps me maintain my girlish figure. My vet can't believe that I'm 19 because I look and feel 9, thanks to SafeChoice Special needs horse feed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has everything in one bag! I have a gelding in his twenties that I feed this to. For the post part he is an easy keeper but needs grain in the winter. I like how this product has all the nutrition a horse needs including probiotics and the price is reasonable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nutrena Special Care . Love it My Oldenburg started on Nutrena special care as it is low sugar and low starch. Works very well for him. Recommended by a WV vet many years ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Safe choice kept the weight Have a horse that could not have the high amounts of sugar and starches. Her weight was always up and down . This made the winters very hard when she was in her lower weight times. An employee in Tractor supply suggested Nutreena. I was amazed how easily she took to it and how great it worked. These past few winters were made so much easier knowing she kept her weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great success with our Haflinger's We have a 24y/o Haflinger gelding with cushings and 18y/o mare that founders very easy. Both of them are on Special care and do wonderful. We really like the fact that we are still able to feed an acceptable amount of grain/Special Care and don't have to "starve" them. Meanwhile we have a piece of mind knowing the nutritional needs are fully covered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic quality I have been using Safe Choice SC for 1 year now for both of my horses. One is a 22yo retired OTTB and 11yo QH that is a performance horse. They both do wonderful on this feed. I have also seen over the year, the quality has improved so so much!!! Thank you for a great feed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I needed We have 2 senior horses, one that has had laminitis in the past, and one that has cushings. Low carb is exactly what I need. Horses love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for horses with cushings I just lost my 32 years old retired show horse with very few teeth, so this was my go to feed and even with him having cushings, the low sugar etc was way better than regular senior feed for my baby. he was on this feed for a few years, and I still think it kept him alive and heathy til the end

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the pre and probiotics I have been using safe choice special care for my easy keeper for about 6 years now. I have had no issues as far as any type of colic. I love that it has no corn and it is low in starch and sugar. He is a performance horse and it is important that he gets his vitamins and minerals and to maintain his top line.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Happy with our choice. We switched to Nutrena Special Care from Nutrena Original when we moved our 8 mini horses to our farm. Our pasture grass tested very high in sugar so Special Care was a better choice for them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what my mare needed! I have a mare that carries a copy of PSSM that has an attitude! She is accident prone and slow to heal. The special care was recommended and there is already in less than a month I can see a difference! Attitude (much calmer), her coat is shinier, and she just looks beautiful!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has been excellent for my boys I have 2 that have been shown/tested to be insulate resistant. Nutrena special care has been good to them. Only wish Nutrena had mineral blocks such as Sweet Licks 3n1 or the Dormor mineral block as my boys don't get but 1/2 lb. & 3/4 lb. grain twice a day thus not getting enough of the needed nutrients provided by a good grain

I have a 210lb mini recovering from right dorsal colitis. Currently on 2lbs Nutrena senior, 1lb of alfalfa pellets, 1 hr of pasture and about 6 oz hay plus gut helpers. He is getting fat. How much roughage does he need if we switch to Special care?

Asked by: Sherri Ky
Hello, Thank you for the question. All horses (regardless of size) should receive 1.5-2% of their bodyweight per day in roughage - so for your miniature horse, he should get 3-4 lbs of hay/pasture/alfalfa pellets per day. Please note that the recommended feeding rate is lower for the SafeChoice Special Care than the Senior, so you may want to start by simply switching to the Special Care and having that lower intake be the only change you need to make. The recommended amount per day of Special Care for a 210 lb mini is 0.5-1 lb per day. We would suggest starting at that 1 lb per day rate, and hold him there for a while, along with the current pasture time and alfalfa pellets. Give him 4-6 weeks to see if you are starting to achieve the desired drop in body weight. If he's starting to lose weight, than stay at that feeding program rate until he reaches the proper body condition. If not, you could then also remove or cut the alfalfa pellets as a next step.

We have 2 horses that gain weight on very little feed. One experienced an acute founder several years ago. We currently feed Wellsolve. Is this Safe Choice Special Care similar to WellSolve? Thank you!

Asked by: sleepy21
Hello, Thanks for the question. Yes, our SafeChoice Special Care would a similar type of product for your horse. However, another option we would recommend for you as well is our Empower Topline Balance. It is a ration balancer, and is specifically designed to be fed at a very low rate (just 1 to 2 lbs per day per horse) and provide the protein, vitamins, and minerals a horse needs, without the level of calories that a more traditional horse feed like SafeChoice Special Care or WellSolve will - both of those products need to be fed at 4-6 lbs per day per horse to provide the nutrients a horse requires. It is also very low in starch and sugar - so the total intake of those at the low feeding rate is much lower, which is particularly good for your horse that has foundered in the past.

Is this feed safe for goats to eat?  They eat with the horses.  My pony gets laminitis.

Asked by: Zippydoo
Hello, Thank you for the question. We do not recommend feeding any horse feed to goats - the mineral concentrations will be incorrect for them, and may cause harm over time. We would suggest figuring out how to restrain or keep the goat separate during feeding time for your pony, or find a goat or All Stock feed labelled for goats that you could provide to the goat at the same time as you feed the pony, to keep the goat occupied.

why feed safe choice special care to pregnant mares?

Asked by: jeff81
Hello, Thanks for the question. The SafeChoice Special Care can be fed to pregnant mares who may need a lower calorie, lower starch and sugar product due to other dietary requirements due to health history. It can meet those requirements, while also satisfying the nutritional demands of gestation and lactation, when fed according to directions.

I have 2 mini's that the Vet recommends keeping at approximately 240 lb 1 is 24 yr - 1 is 11 yr. Would Safe Choice Special Care be a good product to feed them in addition to grass hay? If so, how much would be needed per horse per day?

Asked by: Clydette
If your miniature horses need a small amount of calories in addition to their hay, then SafeChoice Special Care is a great fit. For a 240 lb. mature miniature horse, we would recommend feeding 1.2 lbs. of SafeChoice Special Care per day in addition to 4 lbs. of hay. If this amount of SafeChoice Special Care would add too many calories (make them too fat/fleshy over their ribs), then we would recommend feeding Empower Topline Balance at just 5 ounces per day along with the 4 lbs of hay. As always, ensure plain salt and water are available free choice.

What is the Ingredients list for this? Does it have molasses? Looking for a feed without molasses for my older miniature horse, and the safe choice senior has that in it.

Asked by: Animalcrackeracres
Hello, Thank you for the question. Yes, the SafehChoice Special Care has molasses in it. However, it's at a very low rate only for flavoring. When considering molasses as an ingredient for horses, keep in mind that molasses itself is not the issue - instead, focus on the overall amount of sugar in the product. The amount of sugar from the molasses (which is what molasses actually gets in trouble for) is accounted for in the dietary sugar number that is listed on the guaranteed analysis. SafeChoice Senior has 6.0% dietary sugar, and SafeChoice Special Care has 4.0% dietary sugar. More standard horse feeds typically run in the 8-11% sugar range. We hope this information is helpful. If you have further questions, please let us know! The Nutrena Team
