I have adopted 3 mustangs that are seniors. Right now they get 3lbs daily of Maintenance. I have tried the senior feeds, etc, but can't seem to keep decent weight on them.Would a balancer work better? What about overweight minis that get very little grain?

Asked by: Delbe
Hello, Thanks for the question. If you are having trouble keeping weight on, then you need to provide more calories. SafeChoice Maintenance is fairly low in calories, as are balancer products. The SafeChoice Senior is going to be higher in fat and calories per pound, and you also need to feed more feed. Three pounds per day is not enough for horses that need help keeping weight on. We would recommend figuring out how much they each weigh, then using the feeding rate calculator at https://www.nutrenaworld.com/product/safechoice-senior-horse-feed to figure out how much they should be fed per day. For the overweight minis, the Empower Topline Balance would be a perfect solution. You can also use the feeding rate calculator on the Nutrena website to determine the correct amount to feed them, based on their bodyweight and activity level: https://www.nutrenaworld.com/product/empower-balance-grass-formula-supplement. We hope this helps, let us know if you have more questions!

Can i feed this to my mama pig? She is nursing piglets and i need something to encourage her to eat more.

Asked by: Pighappy
Hello, Thank you for the question. We do not recommend feeding any product that isn't specifically labeled for pigs to your mama pig. Check with your local TSC store to find out what other options they may have in stock that are labeled for pigs.

Our vet suggested feeding this as a supplement to my two senior horses who are having problems maintaining a nice topline. They are currently on Nutrena Safechoice Senior. Can I use this in combination with their current feed as a supplement (~1 lb/ day)?

Asked by: Busterjackie
Hello, Thanks for the question! Yes, you can definitely add the Empower Topline Balance as a supplement on top of the Nutrena SafeChoice Senior horse feed.

what makes the pellets red?

Asked by: Brittneyy
Hello, Thanks for the question. The reddish color is due to a high mineral content and low grain content - traditional feeds made from higher grain content will have a brown color that you see with those products. This high mineral / low grain ratio is what allows it to deliver concentrated nutrients in a small feeding amount, without the calories of a traditional feed - that is where your 1-2 lbs per horse per day feeding rate comes from. Hope this helps!

My 16 year old Percheron/thoroughbred mare is on just pasture that she needs to work to find the good grass she is great condition lite work. Coming into winter I’m planning to feed just hay and this product but can I top dress this with cocosoya oil?

Asked by: Windyshe
Hello, Thanks for the question! Yes, this would be a perfect addition to your mare's diet for winter - the protein, vitamins, and minerals will help balance out anything that is missing in the hay to keep her fit and healthy. And it can be fed right along with the cocosoya oil!

I have four horses, three of them are cushenoids and the ages are 7,13,16,and20. I currently have them on hoof secret supplement and welsolve w/c. They have turn out24/7, when sugar/starch is low. Should I stop hoof supplement and welsolve? Ty jackie

Asked by: Jackiecvt
Hello, Thanks for the question! If you are planning to start feeding the Empower Topline Balance product, then yes, you should discontinue the supplement and the Wellsolve product. The Empower Topline Balance has a very low feeding rate at just 1 to 2 lbs per horse per day, as well as a very low starch and sugar level, while still providing the protein, vitamins, and minerals your horses need to stay healthy - so you'll find it an ideal solution for your herd.

I have a PSSM1 horse, no tying up issues and she's 14. Free hay 24/7 and pasture in the summer. She has always been fed a sweet feed with no issues until this winter, she has gained a lot of weight. Which feed is low starch/low sugar and best for PSSM1?

Asked by: fancydeck
Hello, Thank you for the question. If your mare will maintain the desired weight/body condition on 1.5-2 lbs of feed per day, then your ideal product to use is the Nutrena Empower Topline Balance feed. This is a ration balancer that provides all the needed protein, vitamins, and minerals required for overall health, with the lowest starch and sugar levels of any Nutrena product. Combined with the low feeding rate, the amount of total intake of starch and sugar is as low as you can get with a Nutrena product. Should she need more calories in her diet to maintain weight (which it does not sound like is the case), then a product such as SafeChoice Special Care should be considered, as it keeps a lowered starch and sugar level, but is designed for a slightly higher feeding rate, thus providing more caloric intake. Thank you!

Asked by: Roulette67
Hello, Thanks for the question. Yes, you can use Empower Topline Balance with pregnant mares. Just follow the feeding directions on the tag for the stage of pregnancy and body weight of the mare, to ensure you are providing the correct nutrient levels. Same for miniature horses, just feed according to directions for activity level and body weight. Hi! I have a draft mule with type 1 pssm. He had a hay belly but poor hind muscle. He is pastured with free choice hay. He's at least 20. A vet suggested renew gold plus for fat supplement, then a low sugar/ starch ration balancer.  would this work ?

Asked by: DianaWv
Hello, Thanks for the question! Empower Topline Balance is a great choice for your draft mule, as it has low controlled starch/sugar levels and balanced amino acids to help with topline and overall muscling. It is a grass ration balancer, and is designed to be fed at 1 to 3 lbs per day for a 1,000 lb mule. There are 3 and 1/4 cups in 1 lb of product. For the fat supplement, our Empower Boost is a high fat supplement that can be added to the Empower Topline Balance at 1 - 3 lbs a day. Empower Boost is great to add more fat/calories to the diet when needed. Hope this helps!

What feeds can I use to fatten up a horse

Asked by: L 234
The vendor provided the following answer: "Hello, Thanks for the question. We always recommend starting with high quality hay or pasture. If you are feeding hay, ensure you are feeding at least 1.5% of body weight per day - that's 15 lbs for a 1000 lb horse. Then, select a quality feed designed to help maintain or add weight. This particular product that you commented on, Empower Topline Balance, would not be a product we'd recommend for weight gain. We'd suggest a product such as SafeChoice Original or Perform, possibly with the addition of Empower Boost. Ensure you are feeding according to the directions on the tag for activity level and weight - depending on your horse, this could range from 4 to 10 lbs of feed - and also, weight how much feed fits in the scoop you use, so you are accurate in your feedings."

My horse was diagnosed with heaves and vet suggested to add ground flax to her diet is it ok to add in? Also how much vitamin E is in this as that was suggested too? Is it safe to add morE sh currently is getting about 2 pounds of this with cocosoya oil.

Asked by: Windyshea
Hello, Thanks for the question. We would recommend finding out from your veterinarian specifically what the goal of the flaxseed and Vitamin E supplementation is, and what total daily intake levels they want your horse at. The Empower Topline Balance provides 600 IU/lb of Vitamin E, so if you are feeding 2 lbs per day, that is 1200 IU of intake. The Cocosoya contains a minimal amount of Vitamin E, at 35 IU per 4 fluid ounces. If your horse has pasture or green hay to eat, those also supply Vitamin E in excellent quantities. More Vitamin E can be added to the diet and there are no reported cases of vitamin E toxicity in horses; however, in theory it could interfere with other fat-soluble vitamins and it has an important relationship with selenium. For the flaxseed, this is generally added as a way to supplement omega 3 fatty acids, however horses on fresh forage can easily meet essential fatty acid requirements.

How many calories are in each pound of empower balance? I have a 25 year old thoroughbred mare who is having trouble keeping weight on. She is currently fed prochoice senior, and I am wondering if this product may be beneficial in increasing her calories.

Asked by: Kels26
Hello, Thanks for the question! Empower Topline Balance is one of our lowest calorie options at just 1227 kcal/lb, which combines with the low feeding rate to really not offer much in the way of weight gain support - although it will help with topline muscle covering! We would suggest evaluating her current feeding rate on the ProForce Senior, and likely increasing that amount until she gains the needed weight. You can feed for one to two activity levels higher than she is currently at (so if she's at light activity levels, feed her for moderate or high activity) to support the weight gain, and then once she reaches good body condition, back the feeding rates down until you find the level she maintains at. Be sure to weigh the amount of feed your scoop holds - a small fish scale or kitchen scale works great - so you can be feeding her the accurate pounds per day feeding level. If you prefer to supplement, then the Empower Boost (the red Empower bag) is the correct supplement to use for weight gain. We hope this information is helpful, please let us know if you have any further questions!

How much do you feed, what is the amount per feeding?

Asked by: Wyatt W
Hello, Thanks for the question! For a mature 1,000 lb horse, you are going to feed between 1 and 3 lbs per day, depending on their caloric needs and quality of their hay. If their hay is high quality and they maintain weight easily, you can feed at the lower end of that rate. If their hay quality is moderate or poor, or they need just a little more help in terms of calories, go up to that 3 lb range. If they require more than 3 lbs per day in addition to their hay/pasture, then we would encourage you to switch to a product like SafeChoice Special Care, for the additional caloric intake, as it is designed to be fed at a bit higher rate.

Does this product contain any potassium? I have an HYPP n/h horse.

Asked by: Thett
Hello, Thank you for the question. As you know, the goal is to keep total potassium level in the diet below 1.0-1.1% on a total diet basis. Empower Topline Balance is normally about 1.45% potassium as fed, with the potassium coming from the regular ingredients, not added, and is fed at 1-3 lbs per head per day. You could feed the Empower Topline Balance if you have forages that are below 0.95% potassium, but we would not recommend feeding it to an HYPP horse with forages above 1.0% potassium. For example, if the forage is testing at 0.95% potassium and is 90% of the diet, it would contribute 0.855% potassium to the total diet. Empower Balance at 10% of the diet would contribute 0.145% potassium to the total diet, so the total diet would be 1.0% potassium, which would be acceptable. If the forage is over 1.0% potassium, we would recommend either soaking the forage to remove some potassium, or using a product that is below 1.0% potassium to keep the total diet below 1.0-1.1% potassium.

My vet told me to put my horse on Empower Balance, she also suggested Succeed for his hind gut. Will this be too much for him! I don't want behavior issues.

Asked by: Kathy82
Hello, Thank you for contacting us. There shouldn't be any issues with combining these two products. Empower Balance is a nutritional product, while the Succeed is a digestive aid - it is designed to help your horse get more out of what he is already eating. Your horse may feel better overall and have more energy simply from receiving an overall balanced diet, but neither would cause behavior issues. We hope this is helpful, please let us know if you have further questions. Sincerely, The Nutrena Team

Is this a safe feed for a horse who has founder? She needs low carb low sugar. She needs weight. Founder is under control. She is normal now. She needs a top line bad. But I can only feed her certain things. Is this safe?

Asked by: Katdabney95
Hello, Thank you for the question. Yes, this product would definitely be recommended for horses that have foundered. It will provide the needed protein, vitamins, and minerals required for overall health - and provide nutritional support for topline development - without the calories of a traditional feed. Empower Topline Balance is also the lowest starch and sugar feed in the Nutrena family, which combined with the low feeding rate, makes for the lowest total intake of those two nutrients. However, since you did indicate that your horse needs weight, you may want to consider either SafeChoice Special Care or SafeChoice Senior. Both of those products also maintain lower starch and sugar levels, but have additional calories to support weight gain, along with proper protein levels to support topline condition. If you choose to feed either of those two products for the additional calories, splitting feedings into 3 or more feedings per day can help break up the starch and sugar intake, resulting in lower insulin responses at each meal and helping your horse maintain a more even blood sugar level throughout the day. We hope this information is helpful, if you have any further questions please let us know!
