Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Quality Soil Every year, my family and I work very hard on our outdoor vegetable garden. While we do have three large in-ground garden boxes, we also use large pots scattered around our patio. Like most seasons, we chose to pay extra to go with the Miracle-Gro garden soil for all of our pots, as well as our garden boxes. Unfortunately, this year, we are extremely disappointed in the quality of the soil. When opened, it was immediately apparent that it was mixed with large chunks or wood or mulch. In addition, less than a week later, we found that not only our pots, but boxes as well, had hundreds of little sprouts. We ultimately determined that Miracle-Gro was the culprit because all of the pots or areas that we didn't use the garden soil had none of the little sprouts. As a whole, we where extremely disappointed with the quality of the product we received and will no longer be purchasing any products from this brand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tractor Supply covers all my garden needs! Tractor supply always has what I need for my garden supplies! And at a great price. They always have quality products too; like miracle grow garden soil. It is my go to brand when I am getting my garden ready.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Trash found in soil My fiancée just dumped 30 of the 40 bags we bought and I started turning over the soil to get ready to plant. Totally disgusted to find pieces of paper, plastic, rubber, and metal. I pulled out several full pieces of trash!! Not sure what to do. Will my plants do well growing in garbage?!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Full of dye I bought this to do a container vegetable garden on my deck. After a rain I noticed brown staining all over my composite deck and dripping down the white facing. It was a mess and I can't get it all cleaned off. Why is there dye in garden soil? No way are we eating what grows. Terrible product!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from worst ever used plastic and sticks ,not even close to being composted, terrible product, not good for anything wiyh all the plastic pieces in it

Rated 1 out of 5 by from All mulch and no soil My local Home Depot has them on sale for $2 a bag so I bought 20 bags. They loaded them in my truck so I didn't notice if they were heavy or light. Got home and notice they are so light that I could carry with one hand. Open up a few bags and all I see is mulch. I needed soil. Even though they are on sale for $2/bag, it is still expensive for mulch. Can't imagine paying regular price for this. Don't recommending this at all. Buy Scott's premium topsoil instead.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from mislabeled product I bought 10 largest size bags of this product to mix into the top 4-6 inches of my small garden plot (6 X 17) believing that this would improve the composition of the soil and enrich it before I planted. The composition was improved somewhat, but I am very disappointed that, after three weeks, the plants did not reveal any evidence of being "fed". I have since had to add other nutrients to support normal growth. Also, after the first rain, I noticed what seemed to me an excessive amount of pine bark chips and other unidentifiable matter- small sticks, for example. The results gained are minimal, certainly far less than the product claims. The nearly $100 I spent would have been better invested in fertilizer.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Weeds already growing in bag of soil I purchase TWO days ago. Opened the bag to find weeds growing in the soil. No tears in the bag other than the one I made. Begs the question- what else (bacteria/fungus) are we putting into our gardens when we use this product?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Miracle grow dirt I love this dirt and it was on sale so I bought a bunch.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This Is NOT topsoil When I applied 6 bags of this "soil" to my garden it looked like topsoil. Then came the rain. Then came the truth. This is not pure topsoil, it is a mix of wood chips, and lots of them with what looks like soil.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed I bought several of these bags. It’s all wood. No “soil” at all. I can’t return these because my husband already dumped all the bags. Would not recommend these.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garden Soil - For - in Ground use I am very upset with this product. My husband and I are seniors and on a limited budget. We bought 2 bags to put in a raised bed for lettuce & carrots. The texture was bad, we had to add regular dirt (another thing to buy)Spending more money which is not right. There is NO where on the bag you had to add dirt. I would like to get my money back or a refund to buy a different product what do you think????

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mites, Mites, Mites Terrible product. Like most people have said it’s just finely ground mulch. Because of that it was infested with soil mites. Opened the bag and found it swarming with them. So disappointed with this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extra Fine Mulch The product is misbranded. It is NOT soil, it is extra fine mulch. This product is what's left over after the processing of Scotts Triple Shred Black Mulch and as such it is fine for that purpose. If you mix it 50/50 with your REAL soil as instructed it may provide a little boost to your own soil. However, there is NO SOIL in this bag that is labeled soil. SO be mindful of that fact. If you need a soil filler, just buy a bag of generic soil from the big box store. If you need some superfine processed mulch (tree bark, etc) to mix in and top off your bed go ahead with this. Scotts needs to re-label the bag "Garden Mulch"

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent price I like the size as it is easily carried for an older person like myself and the product always produces well.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Okay Product. Horrible Smell! I bought 5 bags and all of them had a rancid smell; much like sewage. Hopefully the smell will dissipate soon. As for now, it smells like our sewer line burst in our back yard. I will be trying a new garden soil next year. Very upset I wasted the money this year.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Plastic bits throughout! I bought Miracle Gro garden soil for my organic vegetable garden. I was assured at the garden center that this product only contained natural and organic material. I am finding hundreds of bits of decomposing plastic throughout. I expected a way better product from Miracle Gro, especially for the price they charge. I’m very disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from FULL OF SEDGE WEED Days after we spread Miracle Gro Garden Soil in our landscape garden we began to see grass-like weeds popping up. They took over the garden and grew at a ridiculous speed. We pull all of them and 3 days later they are back, growing right through the 4 inches of mulch we have laid down. They are impossible to kill. This has cost me and my family HOURS AND HOURS of time pulling weeds in the sweltering Florida sun. So many hours! At first I didn’t know where these weeds came from. But a few weeks later we used another bag of the same soil in a raised garden bed, and as I shook the soil out of the bag I found these same weeds growing in the soil INSIDE of the sealed new bag. And sure enough, we can’t grow anything in that garden bed now, the sedge weed has choked everything out. It’s infuriating that a product that’s supposed to help my garden grow has ruined our garden and has cost us so much time and money. DON’T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It's not soil I've been maintaining my own yard since I was a kid, and now being 50 I just recently bought a new home. Now redoing the yard to level it out properly for the winter grass seed to be thrown and finding more wood chips than dirt is not good. I prefer to take my shredded papers, egg shells, banana peels, etc. as well as to use the leaves and grass clippings to continue producing a rich soil making my grass and plants grow very well. Wood chips is not top soil!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It's a Miracle Anything Grows Dissappointed in the quality of the garden soil. Built brand new garden beds, and bought bags of Miracle Garden soil to start, until the new compost bin material was viable for use. Was surprised to find pieces of shredded plastic bags, pieces of hard plastic, twisted pieces of metal, and even glass in the soil from the Miracle Grow bags. I am now concerned about the safety of the soil, and will need to test for toxins. Not what was expected for a name brand product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from beer bottles in garden soil I opened a new bag of garden soil. The first thing I came across where some good sizes sticks. Then while planting some new flowers, I was putting in the new soil and felt a sharp pain. I pulled my hand out and my finger was bleeding. I looked through the soil and found a piece of broken beer bottle. Now I have a red swollen finger and have no idea what else I was exposed to from the soil. I would like to hear from you about this incident. Buyer make sure you check that soil before you put your hand in there !!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dead Wood shavings, vines and Junk!! For years we have used Miracle Gro Soil and Potting Soil. We recently bought four bags of the Garden Soil to use as filler for the garden and do some patching elsewhere. I opened two bags and was shocked to see something that looked like dry garbage!! The bags were Full of wood pieces, shavings, sticks, vines and weeds. It didn't look like or feel anything like Soil. Just incredibly dry, useless junk. We taped the bags and will be returning them to our Garden Center for a refund. Looks like I wasn't the only one, their site is full of negative reviews of this product for the same reasons. Too bad we can't post photos.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from New definition of soil I usually have been satisfied with Miracle Grow products, and past experience is the reason for selecting their "all purpose garden soil." I did not realize that I could take my chainsaw to a tree, sweep up what was on the ground and call it soil. This stuff was easily 50% wood shards and bark. You have to wear gloves to avoid getting splinters. Maybe in 3-4 years after microbes have had an opportunity to degrade it, it will become soil.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Go to Gardening I wouldn't do my gardening without Miracle Grow. We live in an area where there is lots of clay. We have transformed our yard by using Miracle-Gro Garden Soil. The dirt is now full of nutrients and the plants look beautiful. It is my favorite go to each spring!

I am planning on planting a few small young shrubs in fabric containers. What type of soil should I use?

Asked by: birdyk
We would suggest a premium potting soil or potting mix for your container plants, such as Miracle Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix, SKU 1011492.

how long does this product last in a raised bed garden? can u just add fertilize and use for several years?

Asked by: barberman
Soil and soil amendment products, such as Miracle-Gro Garden Soil All Purpose, have no shelf life or expiration date. Many times more soil is added to the bed, so it is hard to determine how long it lasts. Regarding next season, the manufacturer has just come out with a product called Miracle-Gro Refresh2 Soil Revitalizer. It is to refresh raised beds in their second and subsequent years of use.

Why is this not for use in a raised garden bed? It says in ground use only.

Asked by: Leaves2
Miracle-Gro Garden Soil All Purpose is not intended for use in containers. The soil may cause damage because it is too dense for most potted plants, and could suffocate their roots. Garden Soil All Purpose is designed as an amendment, and should be mixed thoroughly into native soil for better growing conditions. Raised beds are generally considered a cross between a container and in-ground. If wanting to use Garden Soil All Purpose in a raised bed you need to mix it with a good potting mix (half potting mix, half Garden Soil All Purpose). If you have already used Miracle-Gro Garden Soil All Purpose for potting your plants, watch your plants carefully for signs of stress and, if needed, repot them using a potting mix, such as Miracle-Gro Potting Mix.
