In the late 1800's, New Jersey breeders created a chicken designed to rival the meatiness of the turkeys of the era. The massive Black Jersey Giant was the result of merging the genetics of several large breeds, while the White Jersey Giant was created later. At maturity roosters often weigh an amazing 11 lb. with hens only a few pounds lighter. Although they grow slowly they eventually are a third larger than most other heavy breeds. These birds are ideal for anyone wanting an impressive hen that lays about 240 extra-large eggs annually. When younger, the birds will mature relatively quickly and begin to lay around 6 months old, but they tend to reach a marketable meat weight slower than other breeds. It could take up to 9 months for this bird to fill out its meat proportions. Jersey Giants are docile, gentle giants that are very winter hardy and do well in confinement and are good foragers. This great dual-purpose breed tends to produce more eggs than other heavy breeds and does not tend to be broody.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pick them up ASAP They came a day or two early. All the chicks were alive one was acting lethargic we picked them up as soon as the post office opened. They all quickly found the water and ate their food. All 10 are thriving. We are big mamma chickens now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great buy! I bought 20 baby chicks and they arrived pretty quickly. If we hadn’t known people at the post office we wouldn’t have gotten notification that they had arrived 8 to 10 hours earlier. They delivered them to the door that morning because the mail carrier took them to the door because she’s an animal lover. We only lost one baby chick the first night, which was pretty sad but they were gracious enough to send 5 extra chicks. They are all doing wonderful and are getting big. I will order again next year but now I will constantly check once the order has shipped out to see if they have arrived yet.

Are they winter hardy?

Asked by: Kurtismayfield
Genetics sold on tractorsupply.com are weather hardy to cold and heat. The Jersey Giant in particular, due to size and strong structure, is well respected in cold conditions to withstand the temperatures and still have outstanding layability
