GroundWork Broadcast Spreader, 2811S817S is rated 2.7 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is actually better made than the old units The GroundWork shoulder carried broadcast spreader was purchased to replace a 54-year-old similar spreader that uh, “disappeared” from my truck earlier this year. It works fine for spreading seed. The mechanical components are essentially identical however and deserve comment. First: As the sticker on the base of the GroundWorks spreader says, “...oil the axle in the center of the largest gear before each use …” Read the instructions and just do it. I did this with my older unit and it lasted very well indeed. The 21st century unit is better built and has tighter tolerances; perhaps too close for a garden tool. As others have commented, this makes the oiling of the various axle bearings essential, particularly the main driven gear. Second: This unit uses a heavy canvas sack to hold the product to be broadcast. Seed is fine and maybe pelletized lime. I would never use fertilizer in this unit however. Unlike the steel can on my old unit, the canvas sack on the new unit is held in place by a row of steel staples. As fertilizer is hygroscopic (sucks water out of the air), traces of it that are left in the unit will get and keep the unit damp with acidic water after use and will shortly destroy the canvas and the staples. The can based unit could be easily rinsed after use and dried in the sun. This unit does not look to be as easily cleaned and dried. It is also inexpensive. At this writing and the “can-based” variety retails for about seven times as much online. I’ll just use my wheeled spreader for non-seed broadcast applications and keep the large difference in price, thank-you. The main frame and crank grip of the new unit are heavy plastic and should hold up better than the wooden frame of my older unit. As the old spreader lasted over 54 years, I anticipate that the base and mechanism of the new spreader will not be a source of trouble in my or my children’s lifetimes. Now, if they could only figure out a way to make the heavy canvas bag user-replaceable… If this unit gets “borrowed” I would certainly buy another. It’s well made for the purpose and a very good deal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good Idea, Poor quality In theory it should be a decent spreader, metal gears etc. but the positioning of the gears was gapped to much so that the gears either bind tooth on tooth or sometimes the gears just skip by the teeth on the opposing gear, good idea, poor quality

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What a piece of junk!!!! I didn’t even finish a 40 lb bag of fertilizer before the large gear stuck on the shaft and quit turning. I hope they will refund my cash. Not sure if I will buy another groundwork type of spreader.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the work... however... Read the instructions on it!! Tightened up out of the box into the field. Luber the center pin with some wd40 lithium ir try to get some grease on the pin. Its factory set, so hard to get in there. It does work well after that. Take the two screws out and remove the crank to keep from fighting the assembly in the unit. Wish the center pin had a stud and nut so it could be removed and greased. For a field broadcaster it does the job. Instructions on settings are under the unit on a sticker.

what setting for pepetized lime 40#/1,000 feet

Asked by: eeagle
It is not recommended to spread pepitized lime. There is a risk of the lime causing injury to the person using the spreader.

Why are there no instructions included with this product? I realize it is a pretty simple device, but I would hate to ruin it ASSUMING I know how it should work.

how do u set the setting/ does the little green button suppose to fit the chrome steel eyelet opening on hairpin wire???if so the one I purchase will not se in the eyelet,

Asked by: wecub
Below I have included some instructions on how to set this. Step 1: Loosen the wing nut. Setting point (little green button) on green lever fits setting numbers. Step 2: Adjust the s-shape stop (hairpin wire) to prop green lever. Tighten wing nut. Step 3: Press down the eyelet to release lever and close the slide gate. The Little green button is not for fitting the chrome steel eyelet.

how do you regulate for spreading lawn fertilizer?

Asked by: barnes
Normally the adjuster lever setting should be on a 3 - 3.5 for granular fertilizer range between 8' - 10’(ft.) broadcast width. Due to the sizes of granular fertilizer settings are intended for reference only.
