Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great brand ! Good reputation ! We have had a lot of power outages in the past year. I had a small generator, but wouldn't handle everything, I would have to shut off things then turn on things. With the New bigger model I can run everything ! Easy to put together, easy to run ! So glad I made this purchase !!!! My small generator is a General, had great experience with it, so that is why I recommend General !!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from From delivery to operation the instructions are very easy to follow and assembly went quickly. Generator is very easy to operate I have already put the generator to use and it works like a champ. No bogging down even under high AMP. Very impressed, really not as noisy as I feared, and the easy on off makes operating it a breeze. Very low fuel consumption which made it even better for the overall cost. I have looked into service the generator myself and this should be just as easy. Overall best generator I have come across

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product Purchased for 2800 sq for single family home in south Florida. Fortunately the only time we’ve used it is to start it up every month to ensure everything is running properly. During the test start up’s everything is working properly and running all electrical necessary. Would highly recommend

Rated 5 out of 5 by from big & beautiful brute took about 6 weeks to deliver but it arrived this past Friday on a wooden pallet. the parts were nicely boxed separately and within an hour the wheels and handle were installed and oil filled. Pulled the choke and it started on the second try. i haven't connected to the house but my initial impression is if it runs as well as it's put together and shipped then i will be very happy with this purchase. Definitely pay the extra for drop gate shipping to your house but don't be intimidated by the weight; assembly is an easy one man job. I did buy 3rd party collapsible handles and a trickle charger but everything else is complete and fully accessible (oil dip stick, filter & drain line, air filter, battery, etc). even included extra spark plugs, air and oil filters leaving no excuse to not properly maintain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from i love my 17500 in the north east in new hampshire we lose power a lot.i bought the generac 17500 and have used it about 7 times in the past 10 years. it ran flawlessly and the girls were very happy at home which made my life very peaceful for the week to 10 days we had it running.the only time it never started is when i neglected to keep on eye on it's battery,if it just sits around for a year or two the battery will lose it's starting power when you need it.ever so often put a charger on it so it's alive when you need it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It would have been great if all the parts came with this generator Missing parts out of the box. Cannot put the unit together properly. Will try to contact the company after the weekend. Would love to be able to move this unit from where it was delivered but cannot install the wheels without the axle. I hope this isn't what the rest of my experiences are going to be like.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great machine This machine is definitely going to do what I want to do with it. I’d like that the 50 amp receptacle is on the front of the machine not the bottom

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wasn't allowed natural gas or propane I needed to run my entire home inn case of a Hurricane. This was the only generator gas powered to accommodate our needs. 50 amp service was more than enough, ran my entire home for almost 3 days till power was restored. I was extremely happy. I referred this model GP17500E to a friend he bought one and like me very happy thank god we didn't need it so far in 2018.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Idle control operation When the idle control is engaged and the generator has reduced its RPMs does the unit output frequency and voltage stay constant or is it reduced. An extended description of idle mode is desired.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gets the job done This unit is able to be stored and rolled out when needed. I use it as home backup generator and it runs everything great. I wish it was quieter, but it’s not too bad. There is some rattling on the heat shield. But once it gets heated up it pretty much goes away.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Heavy Unit I bought this unit last year to run my new 24 ft. concessions trailer G-Dub's Grub which I opened 2 weeks ago. I have worked 2 large events with 20 hrs on meter. It runs the 30 amp service easily-- lights, water heater, water pump, fridge etc. All filters, oil drain, spark plug easy to get to, which is a big reason why I bought it. Getting ready to change to Mobil 1 10W-30 synthetic w/ extra Generac filter sent with unit. I use 89 grade non-ethanol fuel. Multiple power options here folks. Heavy USA made unit. My problem with this unit is it's too heavy for me and staff (female) to handle 390 lbs. Overkill on my part. Just bought extended warranty plan last month. Weighing my options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Not my first experience with Generac products as I purchased a GP7000E in 2009. It still runs but I have outgrown it and the GP17500E will meet all of my needs for the several different uses I have it for. Excellent product, highly reliable and all of the people I have talked to that work at Generac and the people at the dealers have been absolutely a pleasure to deal with on every level. More companies need to follow Generac's lead with product quality, reliability, affordability and, above all, the quality of the people they hire to represent their company. Absolutely first rate, Generac! Well done!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No Alternator but great power This generator has great power runs well when it's on but every day you have to jump start it because there isn't a alternator that charges the battery when it's on. It's a hassle trying to always make sure the battery has enough juice to start the generator. If not your out of luck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for price and performance The installing company 1Stop Generators was wonderful. The generator is very easy to operate and has enough capacity to back up your house comfort during the hurricane if you manage it right

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This generator is really nice and powerfull. Live in northern Florida, city of Ocala out in horse country and our power grid goes down at least once a month and we also are affected by hurricanes. This generator will power your whole house if required, starts easy, runs quiet for its size. It's real heavy to move around but manageable, I am using the 30A and 50A outlets in tandem to feed my single home electrical panel because the single 50A only gives you 12KW of usable power.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great machine This is a great machine. I purchased it to run my whole house in the event I need it. It is portable and large and heavy. I bought a small trailer to mount the generator onto for easily moving around, hook it to my truck or ATV. Trailer has room for the big power cord and other extension cords. I purchase a bigger interstate battery to start it. I also use the battery for other things.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice machine. Build quality is excellent. Purchased this generator in the fall of 2017 after a 4 day power outage. I haven't actually used it yet during a power outage, but have no doubts that it will meet my needs. ( I actually hope I never need to use it, but time will tell.) the intended use is to provide power to the house loads needed during a prolonged outage. Our last power outage demonstrated that we needed more power to keep one of the electric baseboard heaters powered up, which had not needed to do during previous power outage. The generator was sized to provide power to some of the electric baseboard heaters during a winter ice storm power outage, as well as provide some of the more "desirable" loads, such as the well pump, refrigerator, gas water heater, and basic lights. The build quality of this machine is excellent. Nice welds, paint, source of frame components. It's a nice build. There isn't much to do, other than put the wheels and platform foot on, mount the handle, fill it with gas and turn it on. It does come securely bolted to the pallet and if you can get it up in the air a little bit with a shop crane, or hoist, it will be very easy. Otherwise you'll have to do a little more work to get it off the pallet I have an overhead hoist, so with the supplied lifting eye, I was able to very easily do the work at waist level. I filled it with gas, and it started up per the manual. No problems. Unloaded voltages were 124vac and 244 vac. I ran it for a few hours with a 3500 watt load, and everything seems fine. This is a heavy machine, so don't be surprised at that. The designed method to lift at the handle and tilt forward could be awkward for a shorter person. There is also a lot of weight forward of the wheels, so if you do try to pick it up too much in the back, the weight will want to tip it forward and there is no protection if that happens. The stabilizing foot is to the rear of the wheels. I will probably add a second set of wheels so that it rolls on four wheels and not two, and mount some type of anti tip protection on the front in case the weight does transfer forward. I wouldn't recommend rolling it around full of gas, that would be 85-90lbs of moving weight. There must have been a design change to the front panel. My generator has the 50 amp plug on the panel front face, and not underneath, as some reviews have pointed out as a negative. The manual is okay. Not totally inclusive, but definitely enough to get you up and running. Where the manual is weak, and so is the website info, is that this generator had a "bonded neutral to frame". This is clearly stated on the front of the panel, so Generac isn't trying to hide anything, but the implications of that are not completely covered. What a "bonded neutral to frame" means is that the frame "common", and "neutral", are at the same potential electrically at the generator. This bond ,if carried into your house electrical system, will create a separate, second, neutral to ground bond in your house electrical distribution system. To preclude this, any transfer panel arrangement must "switch neutral" from the street, to the generator or you risk creating a second, parallel path, for current flow on the system ground wires. The bonding of neutral to the generator frame is not unique to Generac. It's an OSHA requirement for standby portable generators. Some manufactures do have neutral switching at the generator. Maybe something for Generac to consider for future changes. This is just something that I think Generac could have covered a little bit more to aid consumers contemplating using this as a portable house backup generator. If I were to change anything, "out of the box", I would source a better fuel petcock and route the fuel hose a little differently to remove the slight loop seal it currently has created. And of course, I would change the mobil wheel design. Overall, I think it's a fine product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very disappointed I have owned this generator approximately five years, it only has 60 hrs on it. It has been in auth shop twice and has had four new fuel pumps. Also new voltage regulator It has now blown the fuse behind the control panel and blows another as soon as installed?? I seldom post negative comments on products. In fact this is my first!!!! Very disappointed!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Generator I love this generator run the whole house no problem with just a little common sense just remember you can’t have a central air, take a shower with a well pump and electric hot water heater and cook at the same time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great job, but heavy and loud I have used one of these for a back up generator for my house for 5 years and it does a great job, but I have recently purchased and installed a stand by unit 22kw which is awesome., There are a few things that you need to know before purchasing this unit, it is heavy and I have to use a tractor to haul it from my storage shed to the meter to hook it up, also if it is raining I have to wait until the rain slows down because the connections are open to the elements. the only other thing that pushed me to get a stand by is this unit is really loud. I think if you know these things up front and are ok with them then this unit does a really great job providing constant power when in use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great generator This is my first generator, but we moved to a rural area where the power goes out regularly so we needed an backup generator. I was thrilled to be able to find a portable generator this size, because we can't afford a standby generator. I was so impressed with this generator when it arrived. It was so easy to set up and came with an extra air filter, oil filter, and so on. Very nice tough. I feel much better know we'll have heat and water if we lose power this winter!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A "POWERHOUSE" generator This generator is an excellent choice for backup electricity, once outages take place. I live in Florida, home of the hurricanes and when the power is gone, homes inside become 88-92 degrees warm. After this last hurricane, I said no more ... so decided to invest in not only a generator but the top free standing generator I could buy. This "Bear" as I call it ... can power the following just off the 50 amp take; 4 ton a/c, two refrigerators, microwave, TV, all lighting in the home, garage door openers. I can turn on the stove as long as the a/c unit is off. Oh ... and I supply my neighbor with a 30 amp outlet for his refrigerator and fans. The "Bear" doesn't even flinch. Two neighbors have already come by and have asked me for information on where I purchased "The Bear". There is one set back I found when assembling the electrical connections. The 50 amp receptacle located underneath the electrical panel on the generator is placed with the ground connection located at "9-o'clock". So, in order for your plug to function correctly and capable of using the safety metal pin in case of disengagement, you must use a "50 amp round male plug". Only way you can keep the proper alignment. Otherwise, by using the common 50 amp plug, the cord will be laying off to the side of the muffler where it becomes very, very hot for obvious reasons. I did not find any information as to the set up or 50 amp plugs to be used while assembling. Otherwise, this is a great generator and I am very proud of my "Made in U.S.A." product. "Quality you can see, quality you can test … because it is quality at its best".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is...."The Beast"! Have owned a 7,000 exl by Generac for years and never a single problem. Made the decision to purchase this GP17,500 watt beast. Very impressed with the quality of this unit. Fired up without the choke on first start out of the box! Have only ran for an hour doing a break in, so haven't put a load on it yet, but I can tell the Beast is ready! Thanks for a well made product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved by Generac 17,000 Watt generator Bought the biggest of all, the 17,000 Watt generator some years ago, and never used it until now. Living in Florida, you never know, when you need it, and now with Hurricane Irma, we lost power for several days. Backfeed my house at the panel, and supplied power to all my A/C untis (3 unit total) exterior lighting, etc, since we were the only house among 90 inour neighborhood, with full power, A/C, lights, etc. Unit started right away, and ran for 5 days 24/7. Highly recommendended. Only wish, you could have propane option at the flip of a switch, just in case. All gas stations ran out of fuel, so it would be a nice optional feature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would change nothing about this system I bought this system to replace a 5000watt coleman unit. The coleman treated me well but this guy is incredible. I should should have purchase this a long time ago. It got our farm through 3 days without power in comfort. no having to remember what pump or appliance is connected. It does like gasoline so make sure you have plenty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved us after Irma Living in the outskirts of Gainesville, FL. we lose power on a constant basis, and becomes a constant nuisance to my family and myself. So the following year I determined to take my tax return and buy a new generator. I researched multiple generators in finally set my mind on the Generac 17500. Since receiving my generator in February I've used it seven times running it 4 to 5 hours with no problems, then Irma hit. I ran this generator for over seven days nonstop and it was a lifesaver. I cannot thank Generac and the people who built this generator for the power, comfort and support it has given my family. This is a well-built generator and I highly recommend it to anyone. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I am very happy with my purchase of the GP17500G generator. I feel that if a hurricane hits the Gulf coast my family will be comfortable in our home, with all the comforts. And I am very happy that it is made in the USA.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Association said no Propane I checked with my HOA, they said no to Propane back up. So after researching what my needs were and knowing the quality of Generac. I purchased a GP17500 after talking with a Generac consultant I knew this would run my whole house. Live in Florida known for Hurricanes,I am worry free in the event power goes down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding. I have had this generator since February 2017, the peace of mind is priceless. I did look tirelessly and this model was the best value. It easily handles our home ( 4200 sq ft) multiple refrigerators and 2 central air units. I did have the electrician wire the house for takeover, much easier given the winters in New England. Easy install, unpack and setup, by myself. Best of all made in the USA, great network of service centers here as well. If you, like me are looking for an alternative portable power source, this is it

Is this generator fairly quiet

Asked by: Bethwright
As there is no industry standard set for testing the sound output ratings of a portable generator, we are unable to provide decibel ratings for any of our portable units. However, with the low-tone muffler that is featured on many of our portables, we consider the sound output of these units to be comparable to portable models of alternative manufacturers.
