Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good unit and my allowed me to keep my house warm and my food stuffs cold! I purchased a portable generator due to a severe wind event on February 24, 2019 in south western Pa. The unit I purchased is not identified on your listings of various series of units. I called your customer service rep and she did a little research. Informed me I should pick the unit that most closely matches my unit. My model is a Honeywell-Generac Model: 0060372 Serial: 8023834A. a 5500 watt unit that has I used it for three days pretty much non-stop and it was totally dependable. I was surprised a little with the fuel consumption rate. I was only serving three devices. A refrigerator, a mid-sized chest freezer and my oil furnace burner with fan. Total running wattage demand 2475 watts excepting any periodic surge demand when a motor might start up. So the load on the unit was unlikely ever at peak output that could cause the fuel consumption ratio that I think I experienced. All in all, still a real good purchase and now I am ready for the next First Energy outage!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The unit is good when it runs We bought the product during an extended power outage. It worked fine for the first 10 hours and then quit and wouldn't start. We learned from the hardware store where we purchased it that the engine can have problems running on gasoline purchased from a standard gasoline pump which may have up to 15% ethanol. Once we put in recreational gasoline without ethanol it ran fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems good so far Just got the generator, hookedked it up to my transfer switch and ran it for an hour. Everything worked fine. Quieter than our last generator, but still kind of loud. Started on the very first pull, I was really impressed with that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The return was a pain but..... After opening the box and seeing it was damaged I returned the item and bought an in damaged one and had no problems. Ran my entire RV 50amp plus a bunch of other stuff without missing a beat for 6-7 hours. I like it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from General 5500 Started right up out of the box. I run for ten minutes the first of every month, and it starts on 2nd or 3rd pull. Luckily haven't had to use in an emergency yet but comforting to know it is there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Generator Bought my Generac in preparation for a hurricane. Turned out I didn’t need it, but so glad to own this amazing generator for when I do. This baby starts on the first pull every time with minimum effort! If you are are shopping for a generator make this your choice. I will be adding a propane conversion kit for ease of fuel storage. Grear product. Thanks Generac!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent generator Very well constructed. Started the first time, ran well and was somewhat noisy, but to be expected. Being so sturdy the wheel kit is necessary. Is a real improvement over the previous unit which was not a Generac.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Worry Power whenever you need it This generator has no problem running two refrigerator/ freezes, all my lights and any small appliance I need. Quiet and easy operation. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great work horse Bought this during power outage for hurricane Michael and it's a beast powered everything I needed to get through this horrible event for 19 straight days plenty of power I would highly recommend this product
Date published: 2018-11-26
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does exactly what it's suppossed to do Starts easily, powered my whole small home, and my neighbours fridge. Downside is the amount of noise it makes, I have used other generators in the past that were much quieter, although they were probably more expensive than the Generac. Recommend getting a 30 Amp extension cord to go with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Started on one pole ran straight 12 hours Started on one pull ran straight 12 hours during a power outage with no problems no surging no overheating

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved our possessions during and after hurricane michMic Bought one day before Hurricane Michael. Started it at 6:15 pm when power stopped it ran for 198 hours continuously except to change oil and refuel. Powered 2 freezers, one refrigerator, lamps, and fans. We were able to stay in our home for the 9 days that we were without power.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy setup, easy start, nice unit Only fault is noise, but pretty much standard on an internal combustion. Quieter than other unit I have. Only feature I'd like to see, would be a simple volt meter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I had problems Up until Hurricane Florence I had only started the generator every couple months. It lives in the garage and is about four years old. With regular use during the hurricane, I found it really hard to start. At times I was dragging the unit around. At one point the recoil snatched the pull string handle out of my hand and broke off the choke switch. But then the recoil system broke. I ended up removing the recoil system, cutting the pull cord and wrapping it around the crank to start. Not at all easy but that was about the only option I had if I wanted to use the generator. Good once it was running, but I had starting problems.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hurricane Michael Lost power the afternoon that Hurricane Michael came through. We live West of where the eye came on shore and received minimal damage. Our 10 year old honda powered generator was acting funny, but finally got it going to run the house. We had no power to our well, so drove to Lowes in Dothan, AL and waited for a delivery of 120/240 volt generators. The Generacs came in and we purchased one. Luckily a friend had found a 4 prong 240 volt plug and wired up an adapter to isolate the well pump. The Generac worked fine and ran for four and a half days with no problems until we got power back. Running water is a small thing until you don't have it. The old Honda did a fine job running the house and the Generac did a good job running the well pump. We're ready for the next time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use I was afraid of generators. This product was easy to assemble and turn on. Its very heavy and noisy, but it works well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to assemble, started right up! When Hurricane Florence struck, and we were faced with 13 days without electricity,, it was wonderful to be able to assemble this and have it running in half an hour. For camping, though, you might want to look for a quieter generator.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth the money I live in Florida and bought this generator in the summer of 2017 after (another) power outage due to a hurricane. Have used it briefly a few times over the year, but non-stop recently after Hurricane Michael came through. It ran like a champ (we had an electrician install a breaker for it, so it's plugged into the house) and ran everything but the A/C. Hot water heater, dryer, range/stove, etc. can be run, but not all at the same time. But lights, well, fans, TV, everything else ran beautifully off generator power for several days. I would also recommend a Hisense portable A/C if you live in a hot climate. Was a lifesaver, and ran just fine off the generator. This is a great, sturdy, well-built generator. Highly recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hurricane #2 Prep After getting hit with Hurricane Matthew less than two years ago, our family did what we could to prepare for Hurricane Florence, including getting a generator. A friend told us Generac was the brand to get and it did not disappoint. It is loud, but it did the job we asked it to do. I think they all are. I was very concerned about not being able to run it in the rain since Hurricane Florence was a slow moving storm that rained for several days. My only regret was that we didn't buy more watts so we could run our air conditioner, too! I am so glad we bought it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for Ladies Bought a Generac 6875 5500W for Hurricane Micheal. Set it up and read Manuel and followed all directions. Lost power during storm in the night. Next morn my 26 yo son started it up. Very very loud. Ran small freezer and fan for 2 hours. Shut down for refuel. Allowed for cooling. Unit wouldn’t restart. I tried and I’m a strong woman. My 15 yo son could not get it started either. He’s strong. Waiting on my older son to get home to try. Sad excuse for a brand new unit. 800.00 bucks down the toilet if a man isn’t present. If he can’t get it to restart, back to the store.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 10 hrs on a brand new GP 5500 and no power I bought this GP 5500 for a hurricane that was coming. (This generator has the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR). Another storm was head my way so I rolled it out and and started it up. Plugged in a 1/2" electric drill motor and NOTHING!!! I pushed the breaker button and still nothing. Cleaned the armature slip rings, replaced the AVR, replaced the brushes and still nothing. I have a 700 dollar piece of trash. Engine runs perfect, starts on the first pull. I am getting readings with my multi-tester of: 1.45 volts, 28-31 Hz at receptacles~ hot leg to Neutral or Ground I paid extra money to get what was supposed to be the best generator on the market and all I have is a very good running gasoline burner.

Can this generator be in the weather outdoor while running?

Asked by: 12misty
During inclement weather, please be advised that we don't recommend running the unit in a downpour or storm. However if you need to run it in rain or snow, there are a few steps that should be taken. Please note that any damage to the unit due to running it in the rain/snow is not covered under the warranty. 1. The unit needs to be properly grounded. Local codes will dictate what that means for your area. 2. The alternator end and the control panel should be facing away from the prevailing winds to prevent water entering the alternator or control panel. 3. The unit should never be run indoors or in an enclosed area. The unit does need to be outside with a minimum distance of five feet all around the unit (including the top) for airflow.

Can this product run a 220v small welder

Asked by: Jgar
As we are unfamiliar with the power output requirements of the load to which you are referring, we are unable to confirm compatibility. We would recommend ensuring any product you intend on operating with Generac's GP5500 portable generator, model number 5939, not exceed the unit's power output ratings (5500 running watts and rated VAC amperage of 45.8 amps at 120V / 22.9 amps at 240V) or the power output capabilities of the unit's featured receptacles.
