Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Generac GP5500 saved my bacon (and a lot of other food too) We lost power around 7:20 PM on Friday, July 19, 2019. The cause was a violent thunderstorm that ripped across southeast Michigan in the span of less than one hour. I decided, at 5:00 AM, that if I wanted to keep my food from spoiling, that I would need to purchase a generator - pronto. Looking online, I saw that one of the big box stores had the Generac GP5500 on sale. Unfortunately, my local store did not show one in stock, but a store 50 miles away had 14 of them. I promptly placed my online order and headed to the store. When I got there, the store had only been open 15 minutes and my order hadn’t been pulled yet. The store’s staff manage to get a hi-lo operator snd he promptly fetched my generator. Understand, we were in the middle of a tremendous heat wave, and this was going to be one of the hottest days of the year, with heat index reaching 105 degrees. I hurried home with my new generator as the sun began to rise in my rear-view mirror. Arriving at home, I quickly assembled the wheels, rubber feet and handle, added the quart of included oil, put a couple of gallons of gas in the tank and two pulls later that baby was singing the sweetest music one could imagine. The Friday storm took out power to 72,000 DTE Energy customers. Saturday afternoon, an even larger storm came through southeast Michigan and left 800,000 customers in the dark. I was so thankful I had purchased my generator early that morning. I ran the generator all day/evening Saturday, shutting it off st 11:00 PM and resuming running at 7:00 AM the following morning. This routine was repeated Sunday and Monday. In all this time the machine ran flawlessly, powering two full refigerator-freezers, one upright freezer, the 60” tv, the coffee maker, and an electric griddle for pancakes on Sunday morning. It seemed the harder I pushed that generator the more it gave. Power was finally restored at 2:35 AM Tuesday morning. When we began coiling up all the heavy-duty extension cords and putting the house back in order, in the morning,I decided to check the oil level before putting the generator away. After 50 hours of HARD running, it had used about 1/2 pint of oil. Understand this was a brand-new engine that had not been broken in, was run hard for 16 hours per day for three days immediately after taking it out of the box. Now that is what I call outstanding performance. I am a retired automotive engineer and I want to go on record that I am extremely impressed with the quality, reliability and performance of this generator. Thank you, Generac, you literally saved my bacon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick setup and powerful During a recent power outage we purchased a GP5500. Assembly was quick and easy; within an hour we had it up and running, powering 2 refrigerators, sump pump, washer and dryer, TV and internet router. The fuel tank is large enough to allow it to run for 15 or so hours between refills. All in all a good experience and very satisfied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Feature Opened the box and found everything well protected. As I pulled everything out, I was looking for the op’s manual so as to identify parts. Luckily, everything was there. The assembly instructions are short and to the point - perfect. Added the oil and a little gas for a test run. First pull and it started right up. The one feature I can really appreciate is the “low oil shutdown.” When you go through seven to ten days without power due to hurricane damage, the last thing you need is a burned up generator. Overall I’m satisfied.

Can this generator be in the weather outdoor while running?

Asked by: 12misty
During inclement weather, please be advised that we don't recommend running the unit in a downpour or storm. However if you need to run it in rain or snow, there are a few steps that should be taken. Please note that any damage to the unit due to running it in the rain/snow is not covered under the warranty. 1. The unit needs to be properly grounded. Local codes will dictate what that means for your area. 2. The alternator end and the control panel should be facing away from the prevailing winds to prevent water entering the alternator or control panel. 3. The unit should never be run indoors or in an enclosed area. The unit does need to be outside with a minimum distance of five feet all around the unit (including the top) for airflow.
