Rated 5 out of 5 by from Innovation Universal Chicken Pen Review This is amazing!!!! I absolutely love this run for my chickens. I love that it provides shade in the summer but also protection from hawks. One thing I’d recommend is to paint it. The material itself isn’t very durable and sadly, as much as I love it I don’t see it lasting long. I feel like painting it will help its duration. I wish it wasn’t so hard to find, I had to drive to a TSC store far away to get it but over all I’d definitely recommend this to any person wanting to raise backyard chickens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pen for chickens I really like this pen and how easy to put together. Not sure how long it’ll last but hopefully a few years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks good Overall I am pleased with the pen but if I had paid full price, I might not be as happy with it. Raccoons could easily get into it. I am in the process of reinforcing the entire pen with a layer of heavier hardware cloth attached with heavy-duty staples and adding more screws. I also plan to sink tin or wire into the ground to keep out digging predators. I think 8 to 10 chickens would be max to give them plenty of scratching room. I like the design but it should be made safer for poultry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Size! I bought this during the early summer this past year and added it to our kit built chicken coop to give the girls more room to roam, since we don't free range them to to all the predators in the area. Kit went together pretty smoothly. I first built a 2x6 base of Douglas fir all around so the run wouldn't be sitting and rotting on the ground. Placed the base on small concrete blocks to raise it a bit as well. Make sure to use 1/2"x1/2" hardware cloth all around the base. Extend it out at least 18" and stake it down. I used 10" steel tent stakes. They worked well. One major thing I would recommend is to paint a coat of Thompson's Water Seal on ever piece of wood. I thought that the simple stain on the wood was not sufficient. I was right. With the Water Seal, water beads up on all surfaces. Do this prior to constructing the run. It will be worth it. I swapped out the cheap door hardware for more heavy duty latches and put a handle on the inside of the door along with a hook latch inside so that you can lock the door when cleaning, etc. so the girls don't get out. I did have problems with the corrugated roof in that the top trim piece was very hard for me to reach to screw it down with a ladder. This fall, I also added more corrugated roofing material to the open end to give the chickens more protection. I added a tarp to the west side to break the wind. I had to modify the end opposite the large walk-in door to match up with a small access door on the coop. If you are handy, then framing the opening with 2x4s is pretty easy. Overall, I love the run. It is nice for the chickens and easy to stand in to clean, change water and fill the feeder. This gives the girls much more room than the small run in the coop which would be overcrowded with the ramp, waterer and feeder. We have 6 chickens that are large breeds and they love the space. Add a few logs for them to stand on and an old tire to put sand/ashes in for dusting and you're all set. Overall, my wife and I love the run! It was a great purchase.

Is the wood treated and able to withstand exposure to sun, rain and snow?

Asked by: StaceyLH
If you live in an area with a lot of rain, moisture or snow, you will want to add extra protection. You will want to paint or lacquer the coop right after you build it. Then maintain it as you would any other outdoor wood furniture for your environment.
