Rated 3 out of 5 by from hmm.. why plastic the ring gear is aluminum... the pinion gear is plastic. i accidentally turned the key in start position while the tractor was running.. (just because I am an engineer doesn't mean I am not human). that grind the gear. i m so glad it grind the plastic gear that is relatively easy to replace than the ring gear which is relatively no. go figure! As an engineer, i would design a starter with centrifugal switch that recognizes the motor is running, but then i would have to figure out clever design that the motion is not due to engine but starter and so on and so forth..

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor design Plastic is a great material when designed properly but this has a major design defect making them weak and prone to breaking. A starter gear is not supposed to be a regular wear item. Take a look at the volume of replacements both OEM and aftermarket and its clear there is a problem. Even brand new starters come with an extra one! Problem is if you made it out of metal it would then destroy the flywheel so that's not a solution. Gear should have been more robust and should last life of motor.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from cheap why would you make a starter gear out of plastic when it has to turn something metal.
