Item Information

The API Sinking De-Icer operates at the bottom of the tank where it is less likely to be disturbed by livestock, protecting both the equipment and animals. That thermostatic control coupled with thermal feedback protects the unit from overheating.

  • Recommended for use in 100-300 gallons of water
  • 6-ft cord with durable anti-rub protector

API Sinking De-Icer, 1500 Watt is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Saved My Pond Fish I purchased this right before the cold wave in January where the temperature went down to 4 below zero. PROS: This unit kept my pond from freezing over. It works great. Has auto shutoff when pond temperature is about 40 degrees CONS: This unit draws 1500 watts of power (like having fifteen 100 watt light bulbs on). Power cord is only 6 feet long. (Seems odd being you have to sink it into the pond) OVERALL: If used sparingly, you should be able to keep your electric rate under control and still keep your pond from freezing over.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from keeps my 600 gallon water trough frost free I've had this deicer for about 4 years now. I pull it out of the trough in the spring and put it back in when we're expecting the first hard freeze of winter. Even though we don't get that much below freezing weather here in central TX, we can get several nights where the temp is in the teens or twenties. On those occasions the deicer has kept the trough frost free. I have come to rely on it so much that I just bought another to keep as a spare.

Will this work in a rubber bucket to keep my chickens water from freezing?

Asked by: bbsb87
We do not recommend using this in a rubber bucket. It is designed for use in 100-300 gallons of water.

I see the unit is recommended for use in large tanks, but will it hurt a 50 gallon plastic tank? The larger tanks are hard for me to clean out by myself. This tank is kept in a corner of my barn, out of the elements.

Asked by: castironmama
We recommend the 10N API Sinking De-Icer which is 1000 watts and more suited for smaller tanks. Always have the guard installed, don’t let the tank run out of water even though the unit is designed with the thermostat positioned above the heating element to ensure safety in low water conditions.

Can you set this to keep the water at 80-90 degrees?

Asked by: cmil84
They are automatic units, they will just keep the water above freezing, its strictly a de-icer. What you will need is a heater that will keep the water at that high of a heat range.
