I see that 4Health is manufactured in the USA. Are all the ingredients sourced from the USA as well?

Asked by: kim444
Our foods are manufactured in five facilities, all in the United States. Two are located in California, one in Missouri, one in Arkansas and one in South Carolina. We use some ingredients that are not USA sourced, like flaxseed and barley, both which originate in Canada and lamb and lamb meal from New Zealand and Australia, potato protein from Germany and dried chicory root from Belgium. There are ingredients that are critical to our formulations (i.e. folic acid and taurine) that can only be sourced out of China. Our choice is to either include these ingredients or manufacture our foods without them, which would not be in the best interest of your pet, in our view. Some pet food companies are making “China-Free” claims despite the facts I’ve outlined above. They accomplish this by utilizing a loophole in European law. European laws allow for ingredients purchased outside their continent, then reprocessed in Europe, to be labeled with European origin. We could likewise hide behind that loophole in the law, and tell you what you want to hear, but choose not to for obvious reasons. I’d rather you not feed our foods than to tell you they are China-free, when they are not. Food safety is our #1 priority and it shows in the amount of new business we get from word of mouth—friends and neighbors talking to one another, recommending our foods.

I bought the buffalo & lentil and in the ingredients it says buffalo and beef meal. I heard that meal is a lot of junk. What is the meal in your product?

Asked by: EvieLou
The beef meal is made through a process called “rendering.” In this process, the meat is cooked until all the excess water evaporates, leaving you with highly concentrated protein. Meat meals only need to be avoided when they don't specifically identify where the meat comes from. Some examples of phrasing would be like “Animal meal” or “Animal by-product meal”, or anything that sounds vague in description. Our formula for this product specifies that it has been rendered from beef.

I currently buy 4Hralth grain free Large Breed.  Is there a better choice for my Great Pyrenees?  They are known for allergies so I need a grain free, no chicken recipe.  The bag I buy I notice has chicken fat.  Thanks in advance.

Asked by: Samantha1
If your dog is currently doing well on this formula, we would not recommend changing diets. Allergies are triggered by protein components. The chicken fat we use is free of chicken protein so it does not trigger the immune system and is safe for pets with chicken allergies.

Is this okay for dogs with sensitive stomachs, I currently have my dog on hills i/d (intestinal diet)

Asked by: Bdavis728
While we do not have any prescription diets, we do have a formula specifically for dogs with a sensitive stomach. It is called 4Health Special Care Sensitive Stomach formula. It is always important to discuss any significant dietary change with your dog's veterinarian if they are currently on a prescription diet.

For digestion, purposes is it ok to switch between the different flavors or is that not recommended

Asked by: Jrm060677
Some pets may have sensitive stomachs and could potentially experience digestive upset from a sudden diet change. Because of this, we usually recommend making a gradual transition between foods. Begin with 25% of the recommended daily portion of the new food mixed with 75% of the recommended daily portion of the previous diet. Feed this blend for 2-3 days and then change the mix to 50% of each for 2-3 days. Then feed 75% of the recommended daily portion of the new food with 25% of the recommended daily portion of the previous diet for a final 2-3 days before fully switching.

looking to change to your food. could i mix two of your flavors and feed it? so that they have a mix of different things, or could it give too much of one thing and too little of another?

Asked by: jewels5
It is recommend to feed one formulation at a time. If you would like to rotate the diets; it is best to feed them on one formulation for at least a month or two before slowly transitioning to another formulation. This is to avoid digestive upset that may occur due to the difference in protein sources. If you blend two bags; the pet is typically not going to have the same portion of each formulation at each feeding. In some dogs, this can cause digestive upset.

is this food human grade?

Asked by: storm7
Our ingredients are the same grade and quality and come from the same sources used for human food applications; however, they are not considered "human-grade". The term "human-grade" does not have a place in the pet food industry. Legally, for a meat to be "human-grade", it must be processed in a human-grade facility. Pet food facilities are not human-grade, rather, they are ALL feed grade. By law, as soon as meat, even "human-grade" meat is shipped to a pet food facility it becomes "feed-grade". This doesn't change the quality of the meat; but, it does change its legal definition.

A 25 pound bag of kibble will contain approximately 100 cups of food. The bags, however, are filled by weight, not by volume.
