Ref; 4health Salmon & Potato Formula 35 lb. Adult Dog food. Where(what country) are the ingredients from?

Asked by: WAL1
Ingredients that are not USA sourced, like flaxseed and barley, both which originate in Canada and lamb and lamb meal from New Zealand and Australia, potato protein from Germany and dried chicory root from Belgium. There are ingredients that are critical to our formulations (i.e. folic acid and taurine) that can only be sourced out of China.

What is the natural flavor listed in the ingredients? My dog id allergic to beef. Is there beef of any kind, shape or form in this food?

Asked by: Gma9 pups
Natural flavor is a natural ingredient that is added to enhance the flavor and acceptance of the product. It can be from vegetable or chicken sources and does not contain MSG. Some examples are parsley or other herbs and hydrolyzed proteins, processed so the average molecular weight of the protein is too small to be detected by the immune system, which helps avoid adverse reactions in allergic pets. There is no intact protein from the chicken.

I am currently enrolled in Vet Tech school and I am a breeder as well. I came across an article by the FDA potentially linking Cardiomyopathy to grain free diets due to low levels of taurine. Is Taurine being add to the 4health foods?

Asked by: sheriphipps
The FDA is investigating a previously unknown, but potential link between a condition called DCM, or dilated cardiomyopathy, and dog foods containing peas, lentils, other legumes or potatoes as main ingredients (primarily grain-free). Because taurine deficiency can be associated with DCM, a possible link between diet and the diagnosis is being explored. Taurine has not been recognized as an essential ingredient in dog food. All of our grain free products and products containing peas, lentils and potatoes are supplemented with taurine. Diamond Pet Foods’ priority is to provide all pets with quality, safe food that meets all federal and state regulatory guidelines.

I've been using the salmon and potato diet for my pets aprx. 4 years. there's been some Veterinary studies on grain-free diets the lack of taurine & heart problems. how much taurine is in this diet? I'm asking because I don't see it on the label. Thank

Asked by: Laura CVT
This formula is not a grain-free formula, so it does not have any added taurine. Fish is high in naturally occurring taurine compared to other protein sources. This formula does include added cystine and methionine, the amino acids that dogs use to synthesize taurine.

Is this brand a rotational diet? (Can you switch up the flavored/ proteins without having to transition each to,e and  without harming the dogs stomach)?

Asked by: Nicole77
Some pets may have sensitive stomachs and could potentially experience digestive upset from a sudden diet change. Because of this, we usually recommend making a gradual transition between foods. Begin with 25% of the recommended daily portion of the new food mixed with 75% of the recommended daily portion of the previous diet. Feed this blend for 2-3 days and then change the mix to 50% of each for 2-3 days. Then feed 75% of the recommended daily portion of the new food with 25% of the recommended daily portion of the previous diet for a final 2-3 days before fully switching. This is recommended even when switching between foods in the same product line.

my pup cannot have chicken she gets an allergic reaction I see this has no chicken but I do see egg products would this be safe to give her

Asked by: Pityfullheart
This diet is labeled for adult dogs only, so feeding it to your pup if they are less than 1 year of age is not recommended. If a dog has a true chicken allergy it is typically to the muscle (meat), so eggs should not cause an issue. However, it is recommended to consult with your veterinarian for dietary information.

Can I alternate Salmon for a week and Lamb for a week, just for variety.

We would not recommend this as it can cause digestive upset. When transitioning between formulas, it is best to transition over 7-10 days.

Is this dog food made in USA?

Asked by: Sj199bus
Our foods are manufactured in five facilities, all in the United States. Two are located in California, one in Missouri, one in Arkansas and one in South Carolina. We use some ingredients that are not USA sourced, like flaxseed and barley, both which originate in Canada and lamb and lamb meal from New Zealand and Australia, potato protein from Germany and dried chicory root from Belgium. There are ingredients that are critical to our formulations (i.e. folic acid and taurine) that can only be sourced out of China. Our choice is to either include these ingredients or manufacture our foods without them, which would not be in the best interest of your pet, in our view. Some pet food companies are making “China-Free” claims despite the facts I’ve outlined above. They accomplish this by utilizing a loophole in European law. European laws allow for ingredients purchased outside their continent, then reprocessed in Europe, to be labeled with European origin. We could likewise hide behind that loophole in the law, and tell you what you want to hear, but choose not to for obvious reasons. I’d rather you not feed our foods than to tell you they are China-free, when they are not. Food safety is our #1 priority and it shows in the amount of new business we get from word of mouth—friends and neighbors talking to one another, recommending our foods.
