    America's Oldest Working Farm

    For nearly 370 years, a large piece of eastern Massachusetts farmland had been tended, farmed, treasured, and handed down by generations of the Appleton family. When Col. Francis R. Appleton Jr. and his wife, Joan, the ninth-generation owners, began estate planning about 45 years ago, there was no 10th generation to leave it to; the couple had no heirs.
