The best recipes are those passed along as family favorites

When you're on the go this summer, you can have convenience foods without the fast-food drive-through window. Whether you're bound for picnics, parks, mountains, the beach, or other fun places, these foods are easy to prepare, pack, and good to take along for the ride.

Chicken Salad

Chicken salad tastes best at high altitude, says Ruby Davis, of Palisade, CO, so she frequently packs it when her family heads up to the mountains to camp and fish.

"It's a quick lunch to take on our boat when we go on the lakes," she says. Be sure to keep it chilled because it contains mayonnaise, she cautions.

Yeast Rolls

Sue Ann Isham's popular yeast rolls are an old family favorite. "When I got married, I went to Mother and asked her for her recipe for her homemade bread. She said that she didn't have one. Her mother-in-law used to make this bread all of the time," writes Isham, of Terre Haute, IN. "Somehow, we figured out the right ingredients. It is almost foolproof and very easy to make."

Dilled Cucumber Slices

Tailgating at Ole Miss ball games got a whole lot more fun after Amanda McGown's mother cooked up her family's favorites, she says.

"My daddy, having graduated from Mississippi State, stopped griping about tailgating … while three of his five daughters were in school at Ole Miss when Muth (their mother) started cooking all the family favorites and bringing them to our setup," McGown says. "This salad made the cut every game."

Mimi's Potato Salad

"This dish is a special one in our family created by my mother-in-law, Rebecca Rankin Sherling, lovingly known as 'Mimi' by all the grandchildren," writes Eileen Sherling, of Fairhope, AL. "My children ask for it every time they come home for a visit."

Brown Paper Bag Apple Pie

When Nancy Johnsen, of Nashville, TN, wants to make this family favorite, she must make a point of requesting paper bags — not the usual plastic — when she shops at the grocery store.

Not only does the paper bag keep the pie moist, but it also makes it easy to pack.
