Turnip Slaw

"This recipe is for folks who don’t like cooked turnips," writes Jan, of Lexington, NC. "I love it! Family and friends love it as well. This wonderful recipe was handed down from a close friend."

If you’re not preparing this for a crowd, you can place the extra in a gallon jar and store it the refrigerator for up to two months, she says.


  • 4-5 lbs. of raw turnips, grated
  • 3 medium onions, minced
  • 2 green peppers, minced
  • 1 red pepper, minced
  • 6 celery ribs, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. salt


  • 3 cups white vinegar
  • 5 cups sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. celery seed
  • 1 Tbsp. mustard seed


Place all slaw ingredients in a large bowl and set aside. Mix all syrup ingredients in a 3-quart saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil hard for 1 minute. Pour liquid over turnip mixture and let stand until cool.
