Maple Butterscotch Brownies

Submitted by Marlene Martin of Red Bluff, CA

Marlene passed this recipe on to her mother, who makes them for the staff at the car dealership where she gets her oil changed. "So every 3,000 miles," writes Martin, "she makes more."

  • 1½ cups packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup butter or margarine, melted
  • 1½ tsp. imitation maple flavoring
  • 2 eggs
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts

In a bowl, combine brown sugar, butter, and maple flavoring. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Combine flour and baking powder separately. Add to egg mixture. Stir in walnuts. Pour into a greased 9-inch square baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until brownies test done. Cool. Garnish with nuts if desired.

Yields 16 brownies.
