Lemon Bread Recipe

Having taught 37 years, Margaret has accumulated many bread recipes from her peers. This is one of her "never-fail, grade-A" favorites.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1â…” cup flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ cup nuts, chopped finely
  • Grated peel of 1 lemon
  • ½ cup milk
  • Topping
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • Juice of one lemon

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream shortening with sugar and add eggs. Sift flour, measure, sift again with baking powder and salt. Add flour mixture and milk to shortening mixture. Mix in nuts and lemon peel. Bake in greased 5x9 pan at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Pierce top with toothpick while hot and pour on topping.
