Jim's Crock-pot Steak

Submitted by Jim Sodowsky, of Ponca City, Okla.

"Here's my recipe for crock-pot steak, using petite sirloin steaks," writes Jim. "The flavor is great and the steak tender. Petite sirloins usually aren't too tender when grilled and I've found slow cooking them is best."

He recommends an oval crock pot for this recipe.

  • 6 7- to 8-oz. petite sirloin steaks, cut in half
  • Olive oil for searing the steaks
  • 1 12-oz. bottle Heinz Chili Sauce
  • 12 oz. Coca Cola
  • ½ cup real red wine (not cooking wine)
  • Pinch peppercorns
  • 4-5 shakes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 onions, chopped in½- to¾-inch pieces
  • 3 celery stalks, chopped in¼-inch pieces
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped in¼-inch pieces
  • Kosher salt
  • Fresh ground pepper, to taste
  • Red skin potatoes (optional)

Sear the steaks on both sides in olive oil. Pour chili sauce, cola, wine, peppercorns, Worcestershire sauce, and bay leaf into crock-pot and stir to mix. Cut onions, celery, and bell pepper and mix them together. Put the steaks in the sauce mix and stir a little. Add the chopped vegetables, kosher salt, and ground pepper to taste. Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours. If you choose to add potatoes, add them in the last hour of cooking. (He recommends cooking them separately). Serve over the potatoes or rice.

Serves 6.
