Applesauce Nuggets

When Nancy wants to make this family favorite, she must make a point of requesting paper bags - not the usual plastic - when she shops at the grocery store. Not only does the paper bag keep the nuggets moist, but it also makes it easy to pack.


  • ¼ cup shortening
  • ¼ cup butter (softened)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1½ tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. ground cloves
  • ½ tsp. each: salt, allspice, nutmeg
  • ½ cup raisins (can substitute/add chopped nuts)


Cream together shortening, butter, and brown sugar. Add egg and applesauce and blend well. Sift together flour and all dry ingredients, then add to wet mixture. Stir in raisins. Drop by heaping tablespoon onto a greased baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.
