Goat Health Conditions and Floppy Kid Syndrome

Floppy Kid Syndrome in goats is a new condition that was first reported in 1987 and affects primarily kids, or young goats in meat goat herds. Floppy Kid Syndrome causes extreme muscular weakness or paralysis in goat kids 3-10 days old.

Symptoms of Floppy Kid Syndrome include:

  • Depression
  • Inability to use the tongue to suckle, although the goat will retain the ability to swallow

What Causes Floppy Kid Syndrome?

The exact cause of Floppy Kid Syndrome is somewhat unknown; however analysis of 3- to 10-day-old kids may suggest the condition is tied to infection, endotoxemia, white muscle disease, abomasal bloat, colibacillosis, or septicemia. There are currently no recommended preventative measures for Floppy Kid Syndrome.

How to Treat Floppy Kid Syndrome

Goats with Floppy Kid Syndrome can be given electrolytes, oral bicarbonate or Pepto-Bismol. Another treatment for the early stage of Floppy Kid Syndrome is giving the goat 4 ounces every 4 hours of a mixture of 2 teaspoons baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a quart of water. Goat kids may need to be fed via stomach tube, and more severe cases may require blood chemistry or intravenous fluid.
