The Benefits of SportDOG Brand® NoBark Collars

    By SportDOG™ Staff

Nothing is more frustrating than owning a dog that won’t quit barking. Whether your dog is in an outdoor kennel or lives in the house, barking is a bad habit that won’t correct itself. You need to stop it before it gets out of hand, and you need to do it with fairness and consistency.

Even if your dog’s barking doesn’t bother you or your neighbors because you live in a rural area, it’s best to stop this behavior. A quiet dog will be calmer and better rested so it can perform its best when it comes time for exercise, training, or hunting.

Whether a dog is barking out of boredom or for attention, there are few things short of a NoBark collar that can stop it. Yelling doesn’t work, at least not for the long term. Shouting at a dog to stop barking is, in a strange way, a form of reward. Your dog wanted acknowledgement and you provided it. Not good.

A physical correction in the form of a swat on the snout or the butt doesn’t help either, and it’s not fair to the dog. By the time you get to the dog to administer the correction, the barking has likely already stopped and the dog may not even understand why it’s being punished.

Enter the NoBark collar, which delivers a timely and fair correction in the form of an electronic stimulus that feels similar to static electricity. A dog quickly learns that any barking is unacceptable and, just as importantly, it doesn’t associate you, the owner, with the correction.

While many dog owners are desperate for a way to stop excessive barking, they’re also concerned about whether the technology in these amazing yet affordable collars is safe. SportDOG Brand has addressed this by designing its collars so that they can be triggered only by vibration. This is a huge advantage over lesser-quality anti-bark devices. There’s no chance that your dog will receive an unnecessary punishment because of a loud noise such as another dog’s barking or a door slamming. NoBark collars also have a safety shut-off feature to guard against over-correction.

The most basic offering from SportDOG Brand is the NoBark 6 model. Despite its friendly price point, it’s loaded with features. Particularly helpful is the rising correction. There are six levels of correction, with the initial one being at a very low setting. Then, each time your dog barks within 30 seconds of the first bark, the correction level rises one level. If your dog is quiet for 30 seconds, the collar resets again to the lowest level. The NoBark 6 operates on a replaceable battery that typically will last 3 to 6 months, depending on how often a dog barks.

A more advanced model, the NoBark 10R, is a favorite of kennel owners and others who have a dog or dogs that require some customized correction. The 10R has 10 correction levels and three user-selectable modes:

    1. Temperament Learning. In this mode, the correction increases one level at a time as long as the dog keeps barking. If the dog starts barking again later, the correction picks up at the last level.
    2. Progressive Correction. In this mode, the correction starts at the lowest level and keeps on increasing until barking stops. After 30 seconds of quiet, the collar resets at the lowest level.
    3. User-Selected. This mode allows you to preset the correction level. It’s ideal for stubborn dogs that don’t respond to the lower levels and have learned what they can get away with.

The NoBark 10R uses a rechargeable battery that can last three months or more between charges.

Regardless of which model you choose, don’t leave a NoBark collar on your dog for an extended period of time. The manufacturer’s instructions provide clear guidelines for avoiding skin irritation due to prolonged wear. And remove the collar when you let the dog out for exercise or other activities.

Lastly, consider letting your dog get used to wearing the collar for a few days before you turn it on. This will help in keeping your dog from becoming “collar-wise” and behaving only when wearing it.
