How to Keep Cat Litter Odor Free

The type and quality of cat litter you choose makes a difference.

If you own a cat, you already know that our feline friend offers a great deal of companionship and even assistance around the house. The common house cat is good at pulling its own weight by catching mice, rats, insects and other household pests. But if your cat lives primarily indoors, you also know that maintaining a cat litter box is a small trade-off for having these four-legged friends inside all of the time.

Here are some tips for how to keep your cat litter box smelling fresh and clean.

Choice of Cat Litter

The type and quality of cat litter you choose makes a difference in the amount of odor that is released from your cat's litter box. The type of kitty litter could also determine whether your cat even wants to use its litter box, as is the case with some cats that may use the bathroom on rugs or behind furniture because they do not like the smell of heavily-perfumed litters. Tractor Supply Co. carries a wide selection of cat litter, including natural pine, wheat and corn scent cat litters and super-absorbent crystal litters.

Another factor in your choice of litter is clump-ability. Make sure the litter clumps well so the odor of urine is absorbed and it can easily be scooped out.

Keeping Your Cat's Litter Clean

Keeping your cat's litter box clean is not up to your cat: it is up to you. Cats do not enjoy using the bathroom in a dirty litter box, and many feline behavioral problems that revolve around going to the bathroom in the wrong place can be traced back to a dirty litter box full of clumps. If the cat is not able to cover up all of its clumps without uncovering old clumps, this means your cat is more likely to use the bathroom in other places besides the designated litter pan. It also means you need to clean your cat's litter box more often.

Using a cat litter scoop, scoop as many clumps as possible from your cat's litter box at least once every 2 days. Once the bottom layer of litter feels compacted and you are no longer able to scoop, it may be time to completely replace the litter. Cat litter box liners make changing cat litter easier by allowing you to cinch the top of the bag and remove all of the litter at once. After you have thrown the old litter away, wash the inside of the litter box with soap and disinfectant. Insert a new litter box liner and fill it with new litter.

Between litter replacements, top off litter in addition to scooping away clumps. This will help cover up odor that has settled to the bottom layers of the litter pan.

Keep your cat's litter box clean and its litter fresh and your cat will thank you.
