    How Do You Start Beekeeping?

Thinking about becoming a beekeeper but you're not sure where to start. The easiest way to begin beekeeping is to purchase our Just Add Bee Backyard Beekeeper Kit. It has everything you need to start.

The items that you will need to start beekeeping are:

    "Bee Hive" Category

    (1) Entrance Reducer
    (2) Wasatch Flat Hive Top
    (1) Inner Cover
    (1) In-Hive Feeder with Cap and Ladders
    (1) Deep Brood Box Assembled and Painted with 10 Large Frames and Foundation
    (1) Solid Bottom Board

    "Hive Tools" Category

    (1) 3x6 Smoker
    (1) Smoker fuel
    (1) Hive Tool
    (1) Bee Brush
    (1) Full Hooded Beekeepers Suit
    (1) Beekeeping Gloves
    (1) HLH Hive Stand

As your hive grows you will need to add the following items:

    "Bee Hive" Category

    (1) Deep Brood Box Assembled and Painted with 10 Large Frames and Foundation

    "Honey Box" Category

    (1) Queen Excluder (Metal or Plastic)
    (1) Medium Honey Super Box Painted and Assembled with 10 Frames and Foundation. As your hive grows you will continue to add additional Medium Honey Supers with Frames and Foundation, until you are ready to extract.

First time set up will always be the same:

    1. Place a hive stand in your yard facing the South East (if possible).
    2. Always away from play or active human and pet areas.
    3. Place your bottom board on top of the stand.
    4. Set 1 Hive Body Box with 9 frames and foundation using the In Hive Feeder for the tenth frame squarely on top of the bottom board.
    5. Place Inner Cover squarely on top of the Hive Body Box.
    6. Place Flat Top squarely on top of the Inner cover.
    7. Place entrance reducer at the front with the smallest opening being used.

Add the second Deep Brood Box once the first box is 85% filled. After the second Deep Brood Box is 85% filled add 1 Medium Honey Super, wait 1 week then place the Queen Excluder on (waiting to add the queen excluder will allow the bees to transition to the third box). Additional Medium Honey Supers will be added as the bees fill 85% of each box. You can continue to add Medium Honey Supers until you are ready to extract. An important thing to remember is no 2 hives are the same; each hive will grow at different rates and speeds.

You are now ready for your packaged bees. We recommend a 3 lb. package of Italian or Carniolan Bees. Packaged bees are installed into new hives in the spring. If you are past this time, look for Nucs sold in your area.
