How to Tune Up Your Lawn Mower

An annual tune-up will extend the life of your mower while cutting polluting emissions by up to 50 percent.

    Four Easy Steps

    • Change your air filter. There are three general types -foam, paper, and a foam/paper combination. Use the type of filter that is currently in your mower.
    • Change your engine oil at least once each season, or every 25 hours of use. This ensures that your mower performs optimally.
    • Change your spark plug every season. This is one of the easiest ways to ensure accurate and easy starting for your engine. If your spark plugs are pre-gapped, simply remove the old spark plug and replace it with the new one.
    • If your mower has been sitting for over a month with gas in the tank, you may have difficulty restarting your engine. A way to avoid this is by adding fuel stabilizer to your tank.

    Lawn Mower Maintenance Schedule

Early spring, before heavy mowing begins, is a great time to tune up your lawn mower. If you choose to do it at another time, be sure to tune-up every year at the same time to prolong the life and performance of your lawn mower.
