Snatch Block...simple and effective

Many of us utilize the woods to supplement heating. In our case our little farm house has wood heat only but, alot of woodland to supply the stove. I'm conscientious to the extreme when it comes to "taking" anything from the woods and fire wood is no exception. By using a simple snatch block (or several) and a length of cable I'm able to hook to a downed tree far into the woods or on a slope no tractor will cling to (and shouldn't be asked to.) Much like a commercial logger it allows me to "delicately reach" into areas to utilize the firewood without creating a "one use road," knocking down everything on my way through and rutting the soil with tire tracks. One can guide a large tree or a bundle of smaller "tops" side to side across a slope or through valuable trees if necessary, simply by looping the cable through the easy open pulley. Once the load has "arrived" simply open the pulley realeasing the cable and move the load closer to your "decking" or sawing area while controlling its path. I've cut all the wood we'll need this year removed it from the woods with a snatch block and cable set up and then went back to reseed and mulch the rich soil turned up by just a few "log bunches." I never got on the slope, or rutted the road, damaging the roots of growing trees. I chose my path based on an existing naturally unobstructed "drag route" with little damage to other trees and the grass seed I planted is already 4" high. The blocks are tough carefree and effective.
