Some Clarifications

This is a very good product but you need to understand its use. This is good for round, hook, whip worms, BUT only some tape worms. It does NOT work on the type of tape worms that are from fleas. It only works on tape worms from eating rodents. Even the Safe Guard site is not entirely clear about this. This dewormer is especially safe and is also the best dewormer for Giardia and Coccidia but it has to be administered for a longer period to be effective. The treatment for tape worms from fleas is Praziquantel. If your dog has worms that look like tiny rice grains (that move), use Praziquantel. Sentry HC WormX treats all worms (including tape worms from fleas) with Praziquantel and Pyrantel Paomate in flavored tablets for dogs. I use both for cats too but I reduce it to give a precise dose by weight (very important not to guess at this).

Great choice for four common intestinal parasites

I researched the different ingredients in dewormers. Independent veterinary sources report that fenbendazole (ingredient in Safe-Guard) is excellent at ridding dogs of round worms, whip worms and hook worms. Although not as effective against tape worms, it is a good treatment for them. Some live worms may be expelled as they detach and then die after being exposed to the environment outside of the dog. As with most dewormers, encysted worms may become active after the initial treatment and actually produce another group of active worms. So, a followup treatment is normally required in one to three weeks.

It is important to take your pet to the vet for any suspected worm infestation. Your vet can determine what type of worms your pet has and outline a suitable treatment. Vet treatments can be expensive and often you can go to your local store and buy the same product at a discount, assuming it is not a prescription.
Safeguard makes a great and effective wormer. However, you should read the package info if your animal suffers from certain types of worms......Fenbendazole (SafeGuard or Panacur)is useful against roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms but is only effective against 1 type of tapeworm, the Taenia species, NOT the common tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum). Recommend the canine wormer for dogs and the equine wormer for horses (they love it!!)
Other products are available for tapeworm control containing pyrantel pamoate/praziquantel.
If you're not sure what to use to treat your pet, always consult your veterinarian so that you pet gets the appropriate treatment.
