A little pricey but well worth it... smooth tine and more than enough power to break up the toughest dirt

Has a learning curve but good tiller
Date:May 7, 2012
I have been using my tiller for about a month now and have not had any mechanical issues. The Honda motor starts the first pull every time. When tilling with the tines in reverse you can break ground with ease. One reviewer said it is a hand full on a hillside and I can see what he is talking about. My garden has a slight slope and sometimes it is hard to keep the tiller going in a straight line but with a little more practice I don’t think I will have any problems.
Tilling with the tines rotting forward, however, is another story; you do have to slow the motor down or the tiller will take off and out run you. I have found that it’s best not to fight the tiller when forward rotating and just go with it. I also found it is best to use the forward rotation only in soft ground. If you are like me and have been using a front tine tiller for many years this one has a learning curve but in the end I think I will really like this tiller.

Soon as you get this baby home...
Date:April 23, 2012
I purchased this tiller last Thursday evening. After getting the tiller home, I went over the asembly instructions and found some of the rubber washers and cable adjustments put together wrong or not at all. After making sure all was okay, I began tilling our 30x30' garden. Just a few minutes into the job the tiller jumped out of gear. Not a problem, I figured I'd churned up a small rock or something that jammed up the tines. I continued tilling and a few minutes later it jumped out of gear again. Another rock? I put it back in gear and continued. A few minutes later I was turning the tiller around and still had the tines engaged and it jumped out of gear again. No rock this time for sure! I called Cub Cadet and after giving my model and serial number, "Jim" asked if the spring kit was installed on the gear indicator. "Jim" explained that this might not be shown in the instruction booklet because it's an "add-on" which keeps the transmission in gear. I told "Jim" the tiller did't have what he was explaining and he suggested I return the tiller to TS and exchange it.
I took the tiller back and the people at TS were very helpful and after I explained what "Jim" had told me, the manager called Cub Cadet to find out what "Jim" was talking about. Well, Cub Cadet told the manager that there was no spring kit "add-on" and that it the machine was jumping out of gear it was simply a transmission problem. Problem solved. I took the new tiller home and went through my setup review and again found the rubber washers and other items incorrectly installed. After getting everything ready I started the tiller and immediately heard a loud squealing sound. I turned the tiller off and while looking it over found the belt guard had been installed incorrectly. (Missed this on my review.) Anyway, I removed the belt guard and installed it the correct way and re-started the tiller. Squealing even louder now. I tried different gears and tried engaging the tines but the noise continued. I took the belt guard off again and started the tiller without it and the sound was gone. I began looking and found metal shavings on the front of the engine and then saw that the crankshaft pully bolt was rubbing the belt guard causing the sound and metal shavings. I called Cub Cadet again, this time I talked with Sean. Explained everything to Sean and he suggested I take the tiller back to TS and exchange it.
Well, I took the tiller back and once again the people at TS were willing to give me yet another tiller. This was the last one they had in stock so I was crossing my fingers all the way home. Got the tiller home and went through my setup again, ( getting really good at this now. ) After checking every nut, bolt, washer, pin and cable I started the tiller up and tadaaaa! I ran the tiller through some diagnostic tasks and finally I got a keeper.
You may be wondering why I continued after getting two bad tillers. I did plenty of research prior to making my purchase. Along with that information and my own experiences I felt very strongly that the Cub Cadet with the Honda engine was the way to go. Even though the first tiller continued jumping out of gear, while it was working, it was busting up some serious ground. The tiller ran strong and solid. I love the reverse and forward tines and after the first tear up the ground, you really can walk beside this tiller using just a couple of fingers to control it.
So.... When you get this baby home, get out your manual and check it over real good. Look over all the other connectors and make sure the machine is put together correctly.

Cub Cadet Tiller
Date:April 22, 2012
I bought this machine before I had read any of the reviews. I read the reviews before I used it and I was concerned about the transmission. Looking back a month later, I've broken and tilled about one and a quarter acres. The motor is great. The only time it's bogged down is when I buried the tines and when I hit a piece of buried conduit. I even hit one half of a set of tire chains. Stopped the machine, unwound the chains from the tines and set the chain aside. The motor started right up and away I went.
The transmission can be balky. In the beginning, the shifter was sticky and hard to move. It has seemed to "wear in" as time has passed. It is easy to move between settings I use the most often. But I have spent a lot of time operating this tiller and another person might not see the same results as quickly. I just had to show some patience.
On flat ground, this is an easy machine to use. But on the hillsides, it can be a handful. You can't forget that it weighs 250 pounds.
A tank of fuel lasts over 3 hours for me. I think this motor is a gem.
If you have large areas to do or lots of clayey soils (like me), this tiller will do a good job for you.
