Bad deck design.

The mowing deck has 5 heights and is adjustable. Anything lower than the "5" setting would turn the blade into tiller tines. I've owned this mower for 2 yrs and have had to replace 2 batteries, blade belt, blade cable, and now the deck mounts just broke.
I cut a little over an acre of flat ground. This is not the best machine for the money.
I work in Quality Assurance and this would not pass line inspection, much less a true product audit.

Hard to beat for the money

This machine is made by MTD products, like most other big store products. MTD generally builds a lot of value for the money in their products. The one thing that I find disturbing is the use of a very cheaply made foreign engine, the first I have seen in a riding mower. These engines have not a single SAE grade bolt on them, the engines crankcase cover is held by self tapping sheet metal bolts along with stamped tin rocker arms, cheap sleeve bushings throughout.
However, at this price point the Huskie is as decent a machine as any, the manual transmission is more durable than the hydros used in low end machines, the two bladed deck will mow more evenly than a three bladed yet this deck is a light duty stamped steel with light duty spindles and weak blades, care must be used to avoid striking a solid object,
The uni-frame is a light duty 14 gauge stamped piece that flexes dramatically over rough terrain as there is very little front axle articulation. In one of my fields, the hood actually pops open from extreme frame flexing on uneven terrain.
Does this mean this is a poor choice for mowing a smooth lawn and light towing? No, it will perform well on smooth surfaces, it cuts very well with excellent air flow, it is comfortable and feels well built for the price. The foreign engine is smooth and quite with little vibration and is a fuel miser. It has more than enough power for the 42" deck, I was unable to so much as lug it in very thick 10" high grass. The engine produces about 12 hp for those wondering. The steering is light and it turns sharp for good obstacle handling. The average homeowner will put 25-50 hours annually on a lawn tractor, depending on the climate and yard size. This means you should get 5-10 years of reliable service, the engine will likely be the component that disables it and the deck will likely require maintenance if not a major failure rendering it to towing a cart as a new deck is very expensive.
This machine is meant to mow the lawn, nothing more. It will do that job well for several years which makes it decent buy.

Good Buy!

We have owned this little mower for almost two years and have had no problems with it at all,uses very little gasoline for the amount of mowing it will do,just dont let your gas get old and stale.We are fixing to buy another to use with this one,I would recommend this to anyone especially on Farms and Ranch settings.
