Good Machine
Date:February 4, 2012
I owned 2 chippers of different brands prior to purchasing the Earthquake. The Earthquake is by far the best machine that I have owned. It starts easy, runs strong and does a good job reducing the material to mulch.
I do not use the bag to capture the material, because as noted by other reviewers, it takes too much time. I use a mini-corral made with netting and a few simple stakes (about 4' tall above ground). The material is blown into the netting where it is captured and easily shoveled to a wheel barrow or tractor FEL .
The machine is for those who wish to make their own compost and or reduce the material to a smaller size to put out for yard waste collection. It does take time to feed material, but you catch-on pretty quick to what works well and what does not. The slower you feed the material the faster you get the job done.

I tried the shredder, and with some proper preparation of the twigs and branches, it works fairly well on smaller stuff 2 inches and below. Anything larger is a task. It will shred up to 3 inches but you need to do some prep time getting the material into straight pieces. Any kind of a crook in the material and it will not fit down the large material intake throat. Also material going into the top feed needs to be processed and fed vertically so the shredder knives can grab it. If twigs and branches get sideways then it is hard to feed them without using another piece to push or re-position them. And that is scary and and I do not recommend doing that at all. Best to shut the unit down retrieve the pieces. And that is time consuming. If you live where you can easily dispose or burn yard waste, then I would not recommend buying this unit. if you live where you cannot dispose of yard waste in any other way then this unit will do the job, but it will be time consuming to use. Don't buy this shredder unless you have a lot of time or enjoy the "Zen" way of taking the time to carefully process and arrange twigs and branches so they will fit into the unit intake chute or hopper. I read reviews and researched and decided to buy this shredder. I purchased my unit on a Saturday morning and after about 2 hours use gave up and returned the unit. I have decided that no shredder model in this price range is going to perform adequately. They are powerful and impressively eat up the stuff once the stuff gets to the knives. But getting the stuff to the knives is not easily done. Tractor Supply treated me great and did a good job of selling me the unit and graciously accepted it back when I returned the unit and told them the same as above. Great store.

Bag suggestion
Date:November 12, 2011
I have had this chipper for about 18 months and am very satisfied with the power and speed of shredding. I have used the bag but got tried of shutting off the unit to change/empty the bag and using the unit without the bag just blows stuff everywhere. I had ordered extra bags to speed up the process but then I tried cutting out the bottom of the bag so it acts like a chute and keeps down some of the blowing. Since then that is the only way I use it. I have found that small oak leaves are better off left as is, the shredder doesn't do much with them.
