Garden club members at Ashby Ponds Retirement Community in Ashburn, Va., faced losing a growing season when a building expansion meant moving their garden space.
The cost for building a temporary garden was too expensive, so the builder suggested that the garden club try container gardening by using Tractor Supply's Countyline3x8x2 metal stock tanks for individual gardens.
"The garden club thought it was a good idea and agreed to it," says John Kraft, who lives and gardens at the retirement center with his wife, Dottie.
They placed 44 tanks in a parking lot and created a unique growing place that's worked extraordinarily well for the residents.
"There is room around the tanks for walkers and scooters for those who need that assistance," Kraft says. "Also, our residents do not need to sit on the ground to work their garden spaces."
Most of the gardens contain fruit and vegetables, as well as flowers, he says.
"Even though the total space of each garden has been reduced, "Kraft says, "we are very pleased."
