I use these for all of my chicks now, instead of the Mason jar type feeders. By simply not filling them to the brim, the top guard keeps most of the feed inside thereby reducing waste.
For somewhat older chicks I screwed the base part to a 2x4 to raise it up a bit and weigh it down enough to prevent tipping as the feeder empties and gets lighter.

have some feed- not too messy

Baby chicks can make such a mess in a hurry and these feeders work great in the brooder area. I even used them for a few hens to keep things tidy. It helped to loosen the slides a bit for getting feed in & out.
