Fall Project Guide - Prepare Your Lawn For Winter

Now is the time to make sure your lawn will get off to a strong start next spring.

Importance of Leaf Raking / Mulching

    • Clear leaves soon as possible to prevent grass underneath from dying
    • If composting your leaves be sure to mix leaves with green material like lawn clippings
    • Mix 2 parts brown material with 1 part green material

    Fertilizing for Spring Success

    • Cooler temperatures and increased rain make fall perfect the best time to apply fertilizer
    • Determine what fertilizer you need, ask a Team Member for assistance
    • Nitrogen is the most important nutrient and provides the rich green color
    • Too much Nitrogen can burn your yard, rule of thumb is apply no more than 1 lb. per feeding

    When to Apply Fertilzer

    • (In the North) fertilize in fall rather than winter since most dry lawn fertilizers will not release nutrients if the temperature is too cool (soil temperatures less than the 55° F.). Don’t worry if you already applied the fertilizer “too late”, it will not dissolve with rain or snow, and begins to feed again in warmer weather
    • (In the South) fertilize your lawns in early fall before they turn brown. Lawns turn brown as a defense against the cold, feeding before this time encourages fresh growth
