Hardwood Heat Tractor Supply Brand
Date:January 18, 2012
I recently purchased 20 bags of Tractor Supply branded "Hardwood Heat Premium Grade Hardwood Pellet Fuel". I quickly noticed a significant amount of fines from the first couple of bags. Since I was concerned about filling up my fines trap, I screened the 3rd bag to remove all the small debris. To my surprise, one 40lb. bag produced just about 5 cups of fines! I repeated the sifting activity with the 4th and 5th bag. Same results.
I brought a 16 ounce sampling of the fines to Tractor Supply for customer feedback. The store manager quickly suggested swapping out my remaining pellets for another brand. I have yet to see how the other brand will work. Excellent customer service (thanks Chris!), bad product. Perhaps this was a bad batch off the production line or something.

Supreme Green Pellets from TS
Date:January 8, 2012
I bought 4 ton of Green Supreme wood pellets from TS based on the great price and the fact that I had used this brand years ago. The bag says "product of New England Pellets". I seem to get plenty of heat from them however they produce the most ash of any I've used. Furthermore EVERY bag is loaded with what I call wood shivs (slivers of wood about the length of the pellets). In the past eleven years that I've had my pellet stove, this batch is the only one I ever found a nail in. A nail can do a number on you auger! I have a large ash pan on my stove, with these pellets I have to empty it every half ton burned. Just to compare, the pellets I used last year (Turman) I emptied the ash pan once at the end of season after burning three ton!
