Sportsman 2000watt generator
Date:April 1, 2012
First of all I do not write reviews typically. This product most definitely warranted a review. First of all I needed a quality product at a low price to recharge deep cycle batteries at a camp site. I read mixed reviews on this product but decided to purchase one anyway. I drove 60 miles and visited two different tractor supply stores to purchase this generator. It looked as though it would fulfill my needs. I found one at a newly opened tractor supply store about 20 miles from my home. Upon entering the store I was directed to the little generator. The lady was polite and showed me three of the sportsman generators. All three were on the shelf side by side. Two were returns. This made me uneasy. One had a tag that was half the new price but on the tag it said it would run but not generate. The other was listed at a 25% discount and didn't say anything other than it was a return. I asked the clerk if she knew whether or not the unit would generate she replied that she didn't know. She showed me the new unit which looked to be in worse shape than the two returned items. Again I was uneasy but needed one because we were leaving the following morning for a camping trip. She assured me it was new. I asked if it came with oil or instructions. She replied that a boy who worked there assembled them and filled them with oil. And there were no operating instructions. I checked the oil level in the store and it was full of oil. The oil was dark as if it had been used. Hmm. I then checked the fuel tank and it smelled like it had gasoline in it. I assumed that this boy who put them together was also tasked with making sure they ran. I purchased the product despite my displeasure. Again this product had rusty spots on it and what appeared to be sawdust. But i was reassured it was new. I purchased a two year replacement plan just in case. I took the unit home and filled it with gasoline. The unit fired up on the first pull. Great. This is my first experience with a generator. I thought to myself wow this unit is loud and it was noisy. Not like loud exhaust noise more like a loud mechanical racket. I assumed you get what you pay for and this must be the trade off. I plugged a small fan into the unit to make sure it was generating power. The fan powered up. Great. I then plugged some lights in an outbuilding to light up my building as it was dark outside. Another use I had planned for this unit. Upon plugging the lights in they lit up and then blew as quick as I plugged them in. Not so Great. I shut the unit down. Something must be wrong I assumed. I am not an electrician but this was surely not what should have happened. The next morning I took the unit to a nearby electrician to check the voltage. Upon starting the unit up he had an odd look on his face he checked the voltage on the unit. 267 volts. Not good rated for 110. He shut the unit off and said "man that thing is loud". He said he had another brand generator that was 2000 watts and it was nowhere near that loud. He said power it up again and let’s check the dc output. 17 amps. (should be around 10). So following this purchase I was out four light bulbs in an outbuilding, 1.2 gallons of fuel in the unit, and about 5 gallons of fuel in locating and returning the product. Thank goodness the electrician didn't charge for his time. The good. Tractor supply took the product in return for a full refund. I was worried I would not get the 2yr product replacement money refunded. I did. Kudos to tractor supply for such great customer service. Poor job for putting such a poor product on their shelves. The store I visited will probably now have three of these units on their shelves that have been returned. There is no way I would recommend this product to anyone. I fear that this unit may have been used by their store just by looking at it. I certainly hope this wasn’t the case and after finding out the output maybe this wasn’t the case. Again just a weird feeling that I had.

Great little generator
Date:March 11, 2012
After reading all the mixed ratings and reviews I had some reservation about purchasing this generator but I decided to take a chance on it since I could return it within 30 days. I have used it several times on short durations up to about 1 hour and it has performed without any problems. It starts easily, run smooth and is actually not too loud. It is quieter than most lawn mowers. I have loaded it up to the 1500 watt max just to see if it would handle it and it did without any problem. I’ve ran a LCD TV, couple of lamps, and made a pot of coffee on it all at one time(totaling about 1200 watts) as a test and it did great. 1500 watt is not much so if you are expecting to run more than this it would most likely not suit your needs. But as it is rated, it has done great for me during the approx. 4 months I have owned it. I would make the purchase again.

Good little generator
Date:December 27, 2011
For me it's a good size generator for occasional power outages (If I were going to use it for work, I would look for a larger unit with longer warranty). I had a problem starting and keeping unit running at first, Manual states 14 ounces of oil, but it really takes a little less (about 12oz for me). After I remove a little oil, it ran fine and all day long without a problem. I had no issues with leakage or rattling and I found the pull start very easy to use.
